David Searching follows young gay documentary filmmaker David (Rent's Anthony Rapp) and his roommate Gwen (Camryn Manheim) on their quest for truth and the perfect man. While Gwen lucks out, David goes on a seemingly endless journey through dating hell (the men of whom include David Drake and Craig Chester.) Made on a super-low budget, the film strives to be a feel-good comedy and has witty moments and a talented cast.

This is a lower-than-low budget entry in the Gay Cinema genre. It contains many one-off scenes and cameos by the cream of the crop of NYC gay actors of the time. A young gay man tries to find love and purpose -- and himself -- and a career making documentary films -- in a gritty New York City. Ambitious, but amateurish at best.

You have to be really, really stoned or something to figure out this aimless, rambling orgy of self-indulgent angst. What a mess - it went right to the trash after I finished it. A very unfortunate movie about a guy who can't seem to get it together - and films it. Yuck.

I saw David Searching a few years ago on a local TV station that was celebrating gay pride month and it was one of the first low-budget movies I'd ever seen. For what it's worth, the movie is well-acted and it's interesting to see (the always wonderful) Camryn Manheim pre her Emmy win. Anthony Rapp's listless demeanor in the film may cause some to lose interest, but if you're in the mood for something different, give it a chance. Keep an eye peeled for a cameo by two-time Tony Award winner Stephen Spinella, who also starred in the magnificent film adaptation of Love! Valour! Compassion! which was also released in 1997.
