Leave It On The Floor

Brad is constantly hassled by his evil, bitter mother. Once she throws him out of the house, he is to fend for himself on the streets of L.A. Even though Brad is definitely not naive, he has never been to or heard of the "Ball life." Once he stumbles onto the scene, he quickly associates himself with the struggling "House of Eminence." At first, Brad is only looking for a place to shower and (maybe even with someone). But he ends up engaging with the ragtag house members - including Queen Latina, an aging Ball legend and mother of the house. Through all the laughter, drama, sex vixens and queens in five-inch stilettos, Brad ends up finding a home and a loving, caring family.

Featuring music by Kim Burse (Beyonce's music director) and choreography by Frank Gastson, Jr. (Beyonce's dance master), Leave It On The Floor is a queer Alice in Wonderland meets Paris is Burning.

I caught this movie recently on LOGO. Initially, I had a feeling of "Been there, done that." However, I stuck with it and an glad I did! Ephraim Sykes plays the main character, Brad. He is absolutely jaw dropping gorgeous! He exudes sexuality coupled with an innocence that will immediately win you over. The reason I had a feeling of De Ja Vu is due to the fact that "Leave It On The Floor" reminds you of "Paris Is Burning" which chronicled the underground phenomena of vogue and how it served as an excapism vehicle for society's misfits (the black gay community). Many of these people have been disowned by their families and find acceptance amongst the members of their respective runway houses. The music will have you moving and the message will have you in tears. I have placed my pre-order and can't wait to add it to my collection!

Brad is African American and this is his story. His mother, Deondra, is dysfunctional and she bullies him so he leaves. He takes his mother's car and hits the road. He goes to Los Angeles where he finds himself at L.A. ball scene and becomes a member of House of Eminence. He really was just looking or a place to live but the house kind of pulls him in and he meets the housemother played by Queen Latifa who is an aging legend. He finds a home. You might recognize the set where the movie takes place as it is the same one where "Paris is Burning" was shot.



The movie is a musical about Los Angeles ball culture that was so popular years ago. Black and Latino gay began "houses" where they would meet and hold competitions. Each house had a housemother who led them. The competitions are about dressing up and dancing down the runway. The costumes are outlandish and definitely call attention to the wearers. The competitions are judged by panels of peers and this actually makes people strong. The families continue to grow and those who are members of a family or house are accepting. The houses together have been responsible for giving new singers a start and for proof of that, we just to look at Lady Gaga, Beyonce and Madonna. Glenn Gaylord wrote the songs and the very witty dialogue.

This is a feel good movie that requires nothing more than sitting back and enjoying,
