Finding Me

Faybien Allen sorely lacks direction in life. His overbearing, homophobic father certainly doesn't help his self-esteem, but life takes a sharp turn when Faybien is hit on by Lonnie, the hunky, self-assured guy he keeps encountering at the bus stop. This is great news to close friends Greg, a down-to-earth and upbeat bisexual, and Amera, a sassy "honorary gay man." Not everyone is such a good influence, however. Greg's new roommate, Jay, is downright shady, and could be the type of person Faybien becomes if he makes the wrong decisions now. Can Faybien finally come to peace with his relationships with his father and the uber-flirtatious (and hot) Lonnie? A true labor of love shot on a shoestring budget over the course of a dozen weekends, Finding Me marks the discovery of a promising and humanistic new talent.

This clearly a low budget film. The photography, lighting and acting are not the best. However the movie is written with great heart. It has sexy characters who enjoy their lives even in the midst of some tough times. I believed in the characters and the writing. This is a promising writer/director with a promising cast. I want to see more of these characters and Mr. Omeus.

I don't know who gave this film 3 stars but they might want to consider a new career. The acting is poor and the editing is even worse. How do you bring yourselves to sell this? I bought a new shredder this week and I know where I will be filing this DVD.

Don't bother with this one. It is a long, drawn out overwrought emotional mess!

The acting is mixed, actually it's pretty awful; the music horrid; the cast is a mixed bag. What might have saved this movie was a good film editor. Some scenes drag on and on and on and on... forever.

The main character Faybian is a mess, and seems to be in constant turmoil. You got it... a drama queen.

This is one of those movies that you'll spend looking at your watch (tick tick tick tick tick) wishing it were all over.

Pass this one by.

Coming soon from TLA is the directorial debut of Haitian-American filmmaker Roger S. Omeus Jr., "Finding Me". He film brings together several themes-romance, drama, the black gay experience and the search for identity. Here is an attempt to see the diversity of our community.
"Finding Me" takes a different kind of look at the black gay community and presents it with a pop sensibility.
Our hero, Faybien Allen (RayMartell Moore) has no direction in his life. His father is not only overbearing but homophobic and this does nothing for Faybien's self-esteem. Things change a bit when Lonnie (Derrick L. Briggs), a macho guy with lots of self assurance, hits on him. Faybein's friends are pleased. Greg (Eugene Turner) is a bisexual who is both down-to-earth and upbeat and Amera (J'Nara Corbin), a smart and perky "honorary" gay man, hope that maybe Faybien will now finally find himself. However Greg's roommate, Jay (Maurice Murrell), is a shady and shifty character and is possibly the kind of person that Faybien could become if he makes the wrong decisions. Faybien faces quite a challenge. He must find a way to make peace with his father and come to terms with the overly flirtatious Lonnie.
This is a small budget film but it gives us some new insights into the gay black community. All involved in the film are fresh talent and we seem to have something new coming our way. If "Finding Me" is a sigh of what is to come, than we are very, very lucky.
