Bitter Years is a drama based on the life of Mario Mieli, one of the founders of the Italian Homosexual Liberation Movement, created at the beginning of the 1970s. He was an activist, intellectual, writer and performer - a key figure on the Italian cultural scene. During his life, he had deeply complicated relationships with his parents and, in his twilight years, his partner Umberto Pasti, with whom he had an intense love affair. Although Mario died in 1983, the legacy of his fight still lives on today.
