Match a hunky repressed Mormon missionary with an L.A. party boy, sensual sex and knowing humor, and the result is a film you won't soon forget. Christian (Wesley A. Ramsey) is a handsome, vapid young man who flits from guy to guy without much of a thought in his pretty little head. All his co-workers at Lila's restaurant expect only the latest bedroom report from him. So when his roommate Julie (Rebekah Jordan) discovers that the gorgeous group of young men who moved in next door are Mormon missionaries, they take a bet on whether Christian can bed one of them. Christian quickly moves in for the kill, identifying Elder Aaron Davis (Steve Sandvoss) as a repressed homo - and quite a sexy one at that. Their initial encounters have a charged sexual tension, but fear of the devil keeps Aaron's libido at bay. When the two find themselves alone together they kiss passionately. Aaron's Mormon missionary roommates interrupt, spot their brother as a homo and send him back in shame to his Idaho hometown and embarrassed parents.
We can't tell you what happens next because we're not going to ruin this romantic drama for you, but C. Jay Cox is a Hollywood screenwriter with all that entails. His work on Sweet Home Alabama which included a great gay character, brought kudos, but this is clearly his project of love. The incredibly handsome and charismatic Sandvoss, in his debut film, gives us fierce non-verbal emotion that few actors can match - watch this boy's career. All of the acting is first-rate, including Amber Benson as Christian's co-worker, Mary Kay Place as Aaron's stern mother and Jacqueline Bisset as Christian's restaurant boss who harbors her own secrets. It's a grand gay screen romance with large-scale emotions that belongs in everyone's collection.
DVD extras include: The commentary with writer/director C. Jay Cox and stars Wes Ramsey and Steve Sandvoss is excellent. The straight, but very gay friendly, stars are respectful and intelligent. There are some insights into the "blue shorts" and C. Jay tells us which parts of the film are autobiographical. The making-of documentary is short, sweet and again filled with insights for fans. The photo gallery has a few photos not on the website. And finally C. Jay Cox's short film is funny and there's a joke for Latter Days addicts who know all the lines, and we know there are tons of you out there. We give the extras four stars!

The first film to tackle the subject of being gay and also affiliated with the Mormon Church. Notable for the appearances of Jacqueline Bisset, Mary Kay Place, and one of the first films for Joseph Gordon-Levitt, now a popular, established actor but had just done TV's Third Rock from The Sun at the point that Latter Days was made. Party boy/waiter Christian(Wes Ramsey) is a fun character to watch, and definitely eye candy, Aaron(Steve Sandvoss) makes for a very attractive Mormon who flies from his Idaho home to perform missionary work in Los Angeles. Aaron and Christian become neighbors, and Christian becomes very attracted to his Mormon neighbor. Wes Ramsey is very good as the party boy, sad to say this was Steve Sandvoss's first full length film after college, and his acting is a little stiff. My favorite scenes: one where Christian has flown to Idaho to hand back a pocket watch belonging to Aaron to his mother, believing that Aaron has committed suicide, and he's inconsolable with grief(Mary Kay Place is terrific as Aaron's mom), and a closing scene when Aaron returns to the Los Angeles restaurant where Christian works, and the waiter is so shocked and overjoyed that he drops a tray of food. As for the famous bedroom scene in a motel when the two main characters are snowed in at an airport, it may be worth buying this film just to see it. And while I'm critical of Mr. Sandvoss's work in this film, his appearance here got him a fair amount of later jobs, in which he has done better work. The film
'The Falls' is a much better movie, and a much more even-handed depiction of the Mormon Church and gay Mormons. I recommend buying both if you can't stream them.

A Refreshing, New Angle for Love Stories
Grady Harp (Los Angeles, CA United States)
LATTER DAYS is a classy little film that holds its own among the light love stories out today. And yet it is more: some unique phobias and prejudices are examined very genuinely and the result is a movie that gives us not only characters about whom we care but enlightens us as to both sides of an ongoing issue: homophobia.
Bright, crisp writing and directing by C. Jay Cox, LATTER DAYS presents a tale of a West Hollywood effervescent young man who plays the bar scene and one night stands joie de vivre to the hilt. Christian (Wes Ramsey) lives in a bungalow apartment setting with his roommate Traci (Amber Benson) who is a singer (and a fine one!). Into their rather wild life atmosphere enters a group of Mormon missionaries, out from Utah to spend their requisite two years converting the world to the Church of the Latter Day Saints. All but one are homophobic, redneck types, but one of them, Aaron (Steve Sandvoss), is a closet case gay man. Julie and Christian establish a bet about Christian's able to seduce Aaron and the games begin. The courtship is actually mutual and once the two have been together it is Aaron who feels the anguish and Christian who re-examines his motives and feelings. The rest of the story is tender, deals with many interpersonal issues not at all restricted to the gay world, and revealing the ending would be unfair to the complete enjoyment that this movie offers. Suffice it to say that the cast is excellent and includes wonderful roles as Jacqueline Bissett as owner of the bar/restaurant were Christian works, and Mary Kay Place as Aaron's died-in-the-wool Mormon mother. The pacing is brisk, the acting is top notch, the cinematography is first rate, and the music score is well integrated. But the overall reason to see this film (and see it again) is the sophisticated manner in which C. Jay Cox explores one set of religious issues in the complex pattern of same sex relationships. This is an intelligent, funny, tender, and inspiring movie. Recommended.

"LATTER DAYS"
Deservedly Welcome
Amos Lassen
Several people have asked for my opinion of a film that has become somewhat of a modern gay classic film and one of the bestselling gay films of these times. No I am not talking about "Brokeback Mountain" which I shall eventually get around to. The movie is "Latter Days (TLA Releasing). It is a beautiful little movie and deserves all of the accolades heaped upon it. It is provocative and touches some of the more serious issues of life today and for that alone it is worthwhile. But it also has an engaging story and good looking actors who manage decent performances even if it is a bit contrived. If the viewer sticks with the film, there are rewards to be won by watching it.
Lately gay life seems to be quite concerned about religion and "Latter Days" deals with that issue. Nineteen year Mormon missionary, Aaron, leaves his home in rural Idaho to go to Los Angeles and almost immediately meet up with their nemesis, an obviously gay neighbor named of all things, Christian. Aaron suddenly feels an immediate physical attraction which he channels into evangelicalistic zeal while at the same time Christian bets his neighbors that he will bed one of the Mormons. However it is not so easy a situation. If Aaron shows any tinge of homosexuality, he will be excommunicated from his religion.
I am sure that many of you are not aware that the story is a clothed autobiography of the director/screenwriter. He certainly knows what he is doing, especially when he touches on the issues of racism, sexuality and gender as they are looked upon by the Church of Latter Day Saints. Everything comes together when the characters in the movie begin their quests for the meaning of life. Cox, the director, skillfully presents this as sincere and it all reaches an intriguing conclusion that is admittedly convenient.
The movie brings an authentic and funny as well as moving movie. For two beginners, the acting was A-one and there are times when the movie is magic. What else will make you sit u and take notice? I think the main thing that "Latter Days" does is making sure that it is not another tired and worn-out. Even while using some of the old devices of romantic-drama-accidental meeting, the results of a bet, gay man hits on straight guy, it rises above the level of cliché.
The action takes place in Los Angeles and the two central characters appear to be as different as day and night. Yet somehow together, the buys mesh those differences and are able to strike up a sincere yet awkward friendship. When they eventually kiss and Aaron is caught by the three other Mormons who are with him, he is sent home to face the consequences.-excommunication and rejection by his family.
Even though the script writing is mediocre and the characters are stereotypical, we are able to rise above the mundane and the movie reaches a beautiful conclusion.
This is such a satisfying film that even if I could find something non-complimentary to say, it would be swallowed up by the good in the movie. We need more movies like this that deal with the way we live now. "Latter Days" is a wonderful addition to the world of gay cinema and we should be so proud to have this movie in our corner.

I didn't know what to expect, just went of of TLA's review, knew I needed something, things have
not been going well lately. I was not familiar with either Steve Sandvoss or Wes Ramsey, however, I did know Jacqueline Bisset (love her) and Joseph Gordon-Levitt(good comedy actor, great timing). Stay with this movie, even if you are feeling yourself pull away, the inquisition is enough to do it. Rewards at the end, moving, I haven't cried like this since Jay Leno came back to late night TV.
This is an Indie film, not a full big money Hollywood Movie, this one was made with Love and it shows. Watch the Special Features if you want some more "feel good". I was so proud of C. Jay Cox , not just for making this Movie, although was a lot, but for the way it was handled by all involved. All of the actors did such wonderful performances, as a person who has needed this kind of reassurance, if only in a film, makes things a little easier to do in everyday life. I will be following Steve and Wes's future as well as C. Jay's with interest, as I know they will be successful.

Having watched a wide variety of independently produced films, I was not sure what to expect, some are good, and many leave a lot to be desired, but based on reviews, i decided to try this file. Well, plain and simple, I was so pleasantly surprised and captivated by the story and script, the directing, and acting in this little film, that I have since watched it three more times, something I almost never do.
The two primary actors, Wes Ramsey (Christian) and Steve Sandvoss (Aaron) each gave solid, believable performances for their roles, and the script was well written. The director did a solid job of tying each scene into the next as the unfolding romance and drama built...right to the end of the movie. I often watch these types of independent movies and get to the end and feel as though the acting and script left a lot to be desired, but not this film, the actors gave strong performances, the script was sound and flowed, and the video and audio quality was well done.
The story centers around a bet that Christian, a good looking, gay, shallow party boy had with his coworkers to seduce his neighbor, Aaron, an attractive closeted gay Mormon missionary. But soon, Christian finds that he has growing feelings for Aaron that he has never experienced for another person and the story begins to build. Aaron, confused and naive about his sexual feelings, struggles with his emotions as he feels himself both drawn to and turned off by Christian's carefree and shallow personality.
There are several well done scenes in the movie between Aaron and Christian that led Christian to begin reevaluating his carefree party boy lifestyle, which opens the door for Christian to grow both emotionally and as a person. These same scenes Aaron, for the first time, to begin to deal with his darkest and most personal secret...the fact that he is gay.
I am not going to go into any more about the film because I don't want to give away all the tender action and emotion that run through this film nor spoil the ending.
Bottom line, this is simply one of the best independent films I have seen, and it is well worth watching. Having watched the film four times now, I think this film just gets better and better each time I watch it. The director knew what he wanted from this film, had a good script to follow, and Wes Ramsey and Steve Sandvoss seem to have a natural rapport which allows them to both bring their characters to life on-screen.

That was several years ago, since then I did find out who my real friends were, and along the way, that special someone to make me happy. Latter Days will probably become the premiere romantic gay film of this decade. It's timeless. The acting was superb and the script was top rate and the music was absolutely perfect for each segment the story told. For me, Latter Days had the 1 main element that has been missing from some big named films - even those which were nominated for Oscars.
Latter Days had Lila Montagne, played by the ever-so classy Jacqueline Bisset. She was the compassionate, wise, and classy soul that touched me beyond all others in this film. Her monologue at the Thanksgiving table brought one of MANY tears to my eyes. May all those others in the cast have learned from this dear, classic acress!

I've never felt the need to write a review of any film I've ever seen. Mainly due to the fact that I've never seen a film that inspired me to even write one...until I've seen this movie. I've seen reviews of those here who gave it a low score. My question to you is--did you actually SEE this movie?? I originally saw a copy of it at Blockbuster for weeks and passed it up several times. When I rented it and watched it, it was the most honest, heartfelt, comical, and yes, truly inspirational film I've seen in a long time. Jacqueline Bisset delivers a performance that screams bravo! We all know boys like Christian..and in some ways wonder if they will ever find true love and Aaron shows us that it may be rought to be "different", but not impossible to find someone who will accept us and love us for who we are. I've enjoyed this movie so much that I purchased every copy they had and gave them out to friends(and there are quite a few--I'm broke now!) and they all agree...if a movie can capture your attention so much so that you laugh, cry, and rejoice in these characters, it's well worth the money. C Jay Cox delivers a story that is worthy of a second viewing....or third....or fourth of those who simply don't get it!!!!

A famed reviewer once said you can judge a film, in part, by how much you care about the characters. On that level this succeeds beautifully -- witness the "happy" tears it will evoke at the end. In a genre which hasn't seen a whole lot of high quality or even fully professional work (at least in my experience), this stands out as a classic of gay sensibility and sensitivity. Technically and artistically it's head and shoulders above anything I expected. A great flick, and a real triumph for TLA!

I read several reviews of Latter Days before I decided to write my own. Each person reviewing this film brings to their review their own life's experiences. For me, being a gay non-active member of the Morman church, what emotionally hooked me the most with this film was Aaron's relationship to a higher power in light of his being gay.
It took years for me to finally accept that being gay is all right. That process of growth also meant I had to redefine my concept of "god." In the scene between Aaron and his mother there is a line that devastated me. She says that while Heavenly Father can forgive what Aaron has done, He could never forgive who Aaron is. Aaron is gay. This mother is telling her son that God cannot accept him because of who and what he is.
This is a twist on the old saying, hate the sin, love the sinner. Yet, if we are honest, when we look at the people who use cliches like this to express their feelings, we all know that what they mean is that they might be able to look beyond the sin but they can never move beyond who and what the sinner is.
I can tell you from experience that this kills your soul. Yet, in the Morman church - indeed, within many social and political spheres - this is what is being done to those of us who do not fit the herd's concept of normal.
Because of this painfully honest moment in Latter Days, I give the film four stars. It brought back a pain to me I have worked hard to bury. Yet, we should never forget where we come from. There's always someone out there who wants to put us back at any cost.
I cared about the characters, I believe that the journey Aaron and Christian took was believable, and the music in the movie is incredible! Love and acceptance of oneself is the message I got from this film. after all, if we do not love ourselves, how can we love someone else?

The movie was perhaps more meaningful to me as I was once an LDS missionary as well, but I found most of the acting and the story line to be really good. There is 1 really poor moment between the LDS character and his mom, but they bring it back fairly rapidly. The sexual tension between the 2 main characters is palpable. The ending was very emotional and well done. Definitely recommend it.

I sometimes wonder when reading reviews of these movies, when did we become so jaded? This movie is about as close to a feel good, feel sad, feel good gay movie as one will find. Instead of looking for flaws, I prefer to praise the beautiful characteristics of this film. C Jay Cox has created a visually stunning and very decently acted gay masterpiece. This movie made me feel for the characters, even those I didn't agree with and kept me on the edge of my seat. There was a bit of everything: stunning cinematography, great score, impressive script, and a decent sense of what love really means in this confusing gay world we live in. This is a movie of hope and I highly recommend it to anyone, gay or straight who wants some high caliber entertainment!

I mostly enjoyed this movie, though I had some problems with a few parts. **Some spoilers follow*** One big problem I had was with the numerous coincidences. I do realize that the writer/director was trying to show that the two leads were meant to be together and so the coincidences were the actions of a higher power, but I just think he took it too far-particularly the bit where Christian scribbles some numbers and voila! it's Aaron's home phone number.
Also, the scene where that guy with AIDS touches Christian and gets a psychic reading from him of "just snow" made my eyes roll.
Not being at all religious, maybe I'm biased; but I just think these 2 bits did not further the plot or themes in any real way, and just took the movie into complete fantasy land.
That being said, I did think the acting was mostly really good-particularly Mary Kay Place and Steve Sandvoss. And the story was pretty sweet, with a nice romantic, happy ending.
I do also want to add that I totally do not get people's comments below who say the commentary and extras ruined the movie for them. I think it's scarily naïve to think the actors in movies need to have had the specific experience they're trying to portray. It is called ACTting. Should orphans only be played by orphans? Should jews only be limited to playing jews-after all, how could they know what being Christian is like, and how could a Christian ever know what it's like to be a jew? Certainly, it helps for an actor to be able to draw on his/her actual experience for a role-but I don't believe they need to have had the exact same experience, just a relatable one.
As for the comment that Sandvoss made in the extras that he'd never play a gay character, how could you not know he was joking??
I also think a big reason gay actors are not cast in gay rolls is because many gay actors don't want those roles; they're afraid to be typecast. And I think that is the real problem.

I have to agree with Drew. I watched the whole movie through and found it entertaining, but after watching the DVD extras and watching the movie again with commentaries, I was pretty put off by it. Inane commentaries about clothing, love scenes, etc. were just too much to handle from 2 too young "straight" actors. Even worse, Steve Sandvoss makes a comment in the interviews about "never played gay and never will" or something to that effect...AS IF THE CHARACTER OF ELDER AARON ISN'T GAY!! Huh? Hello, did I miss something? What kind of comment is that on a film marketed chiefly to the LGBTI community and allies? Cute boy, but that just doesn't cut it. More gay actors playing gay roles, please.

I've read all the other reviews to date on this fine film. The one most striking to me is from the 66 year old gentlemen who said he saw this movie and was moved by it tremendously, as he has been living in the closet his whole life. What a different world he, and all of us, would have lived in if this striking film was made 50+ years ago.
The most personally striking thing to me in the movie is the development of Christian's character from a one-night-stand superficial prettyboy to a real person who begins to think clearly, perhaps for the first time in his life, of how others really see him and what it is he's really longing for after the latest trick has departed. Many one night stand artists saw themselves in his character and I feel thats one reason this movie is striking and "real". Another reason this movie is striking is the character of Steve Sandvoss' Elder Aaron Davis. Quite simply, without him in the role he plays here, this movie would not be the same. He is so beautiful, so pure, so innocent, so lovable - let me repeat: l o v a b l e -, so "that boy in all of us when we were younger", so watchable, and so identifiable that he carries this whole movie in every scene whether he's in it or not. What happens to him? Will he convert Christian? Will he slip away from his fellow "elders" and hang out with the wild boy in the short shorts? Indeed, without him - his looks, his demanor, his innate goodness which comes through better on the screen than Bambi, this movie would be still impressive but no where near as good. The formula of the movie is essentially predictable and some of the plot tie-ins are a bit too convenient to work out in real life - such as the broken-hearted boyfriends secret diary being discovered by the nosy requisite fag hag aspiring singer who parlays snooping into a music video and record deal is more fantasy than reality in my world, yet, this and other too convenient plot connector tie-ins are not worth spending too much cognitive attention to when there's more important questions and unknowns to ponder and watch. Namely, will Aaron and Christian get together and get back together? I would have liked to have seen more of their life together after the re-uniting. Sequel???? I hope so. How are they doing together? How are they each adjusting to their new life? Especially Aaron. Will his cardboard parents reveal their human-ness enough to show him love again? (How did such a sweet beautiful man emerge from such parents with the emotive skills of a thumbtack?)
I was moved a lot by the whole movie, it made me think, made me cry, made me happy for Christian and Aaron, and made me sad it was over. What else can one ask from a movie?
After it was over, I began to think of straight friends I'd like to show this movie to, and what they'd say. I haven't had the opportuntity to watch it with any of my straight friends yet but i'd enjoy hearing from others who have and what their straight friends said. This movie will touch each gay person who sees it in different individual ways, as it did me as stated briefly above. Get this movie and allow it to touch you.

I will say I liked the movie. BUT the actors weren't believable. Why is it that in "GAY THEMED" movies they pick straights to play the parts? I doub't that there a no gay actors. Or are gays only allowed to do porn movies? The producers need to wake up and use real life gays for the parts. There was no excitement or passion in this love affair. No spark in their eyes. How could there be? They don't have a clue what it is like to be in love with another man. If TLA is owned by gays, then it's time to wake up and use gays in their sponsered movies. I for one am sick of watching straight men pretend to be gay. It doesn't work folks. It's a sham at best. It's too bad because this could have been a 4+ star movie. I am glad I didn't buy it and just borrowed it from a friend who was also dissapointed for the same reasons.

Particulary the cheesey I'm going to fly to him scenes, were totally outblown, and the penis wanna-be clockwork orange nod did not fit in. The characters had no chemistry other than that of the "on the surface" lust Christain so desperately wanted to give up in his life. Other than some good humor, the movie lacked real connections, especially the mother who seemed like it was all just a common reaction for her son to go off himself. I dunno after the airport love scene, like a 9/11 plane the plot, feel, and characters all g- into brick and metal, leaving nothing but ash and reminence of a better time.

This movie WAS good. I was completely captivated with the plot of a christian-raised male, confused in the dilemma of being gay while still trying to find faith in God. I related to all of it, and I felt like I connected with it in a higher level. BUT as the previous comment from Drew stated, my respect for the movie was completely butchered after I watched the extras and commentary. The two actors had never really gone through the trauma of turning back on God, let alone the pain of being gay. I felt that all of it was fake, and even though movie actors are MEANT to play fake roles, knowing that a straight male (who didnt seem to have had a serious christian background whatsoever), could ever really relate to those who had gone through the afflictions of god and homosexuality. Roles like these need to be played out by those who have had actual past experiences and emotions to draw from...They were not meant for straight surfboys who have no idea what it is really like to be a gay christian in the real world.

The whole movie was just awesome BUT I was really put down by the commentary on the DVD. In the introduction of the first 2 minutes of the commentary, the first thing that the actors that play Aaron and Christian tell us that they are straight. I thought this was kind of weird for the introduction but it got worse.
The commentary included the two main actors (Steve Sand and Wes Ramsey) and the director, C.Jay Cox. Instead of talking about what it was like to make this movie, the two actors made fun of actor's (Christian) clothing throughout. When Christian's character was having sex, the two 'straight' actors had to laugh and question what position that was and joked about how it was being done (Christian's character was being rimmed).
When C.Jay Cox asked the actors (many times) how they would prepare for a scene or what they felt when doing a 'kiss' or 'love making' scene, the actors would say "I blocked it out", "I don't remember" or just laugh at the question and change the subject by talking about the song that was playing in the background at that time.
These actors had no feeling for their involvement for this movie and they even referred to the fact (while laughing) that they did it for the money and exposure. I felt embarrassed for C.Jay having to hear this commentary. I'm glad I rented this movie because now I will not be buying it or even purchasing the soundtrack for it.
I just really hope that in the future that gay roles are given to more gay actors who will do better justice and honesty to the role that they play.
C.Jay Cox, I hope you read this. I felt really taken, laughed at and put down for being a gay male and for any other gay male out there.

I didn't mention perhaps that the most significant moment in this beautiful love story is a very serious political observation. During the scene in which Aaron confronts his narrow Mormon mother, Aaron tearfully asks: "What if it's not something I've done, what if it's who I am?" His mother unexpectedly slaps him violently, saying that he shouldn't ever think such a thing, that "Heavenly Father" might forgive him for something he's done but never if it's who he is.
The meaning of the exchange is one I had never even considered. I had always felt that if we, as queers, convinced our "religious" enemies of the obvious scientific fact that we are biologically set up this way--part of "God's" creation, rather than having made some unacceptable "choice," it would be a great stride forward. So this bit of dialogue was the scariest and most dangerous I had ever heard. In essence, it puts forth the view that a natural queer state actually *removes* us from their God's design. It goes far beyond the hypocritical old "hate the sin, love the sinner" rubbish, and could be used to justify the wholesale extermination of queers with impunity. I assume the sentiment in the dialogue is accurate, as the film was made by an ex-Mormon. The message for us is clear: know thine enemy.

It's interesting that this film received so much buzz and yet it seems never to have made an appearance in theatres where I live: in Boston, a GLBT center. So my first exposure to it has been the new DVD release.
There is no question that it's an important film which touches a number of issues. Like many other gay films, it is populated by standard characters: e.g., party boy, fun straight female room-mate/best friend, intuitive gay man with AIDS, sage and supportive middle-aged straight woman. Yet the roles are played with such conviction, and the situations are imaginative enough that some seemingly old formulas make for a very compelling experience. The dramatic involvement in this film is amazing and I was genuinely touched and drawn in. It is certainly a DVD to which I will return many times. With "Angels in America" also appearing in 2003, it's amazing how much the topic of Mormonism and its relationship with our people is appearing in gay cinema.
Interestingly, TLA felt it necessary to issue--in limited numbers--an R-rated version of this unrated film for bigger video rental chains and libraries, even though the theatrical version was never anything other than NC-17. The usual unrated version catalogue number is TLAD-084; the the R-rated version is TLAD-086 Only the original unrated version is offerred on the TLA site. I would not recommend the altered R version--happily nearly impossible to find anyway, but it's interesting how few changes were necessary to get that R rating: only the opening comic mistaken identity oral sex scene was re-framed to lessen its visual directness. The beautiful love-making between the two wonderful principals at the center of the film was not touched for the R version, despite a fleeting glimpse of genitalia.
The DVD offers a number of extras, most interesting of which are the deleted scenes. My feeling is that they should not have been deleted because they do add thrust and dimension. While the final release is brilliant, the director's thinking in ultimately omitting these scenes doesn't seem very convincing.

Once you really get into the story and the characters this movie will move you in a way every Incredible movie should. Tears were falling from my eyes probably for well over an hour of this movie. Due to touching on many subjects that touch that place in your heart where we can all identify with at least one character at some point in the movie. And you realize OMG that's me, I went thru that and that is when this movie truly becomes a classic. This is by far one of the greatest stories ever told in gay movies. Its a movie that will touch us all, make us laugh and cry and in the end you'll all be asking yourselves do you believe in God? If that question confuses you see the movie and you'll understand. One thing I know for sure, God is out there somewhere and has angels everywhere helping us to follow what is truly in our hearts. Leading us to finding Love, Honest, and the one person who in just one kiss can make your world open up and give you a whole new perspective on why we are all really here. Love is always the begining and the end of every story. Love is what the world is all about.

C. Jay Cox (who also wrote Sweet Home Alabama) brings us a touching, heartwarming love story about Aaron, a closeted Mormon missionary, played by the handsome and endearing Steve Sandvoss, who falls for a West Hollywood, pretty boy, Christian, Wes Ramsey, while spreading the gospel in and around "Sodom and Gommorah", Los Angeles.
The two cultures collide and the storyline, although a bit contrived at times, touches on some serious issues like, faith, homosexuality, AIDS, and teen suicide, but with a soft touch and is never upon you but opens it up for discussion and thought. C. Jay Cox grew up Mormon and brings us this story from his own personal views and draws upon his own experiences to tell the tale of love and redemption. It's too bad that there wasn't a theatrical as well as a director's cut of this film as this could've made a great mainstream movie and should be seen by everyone. Unfortunately, it never made it to most theaters most likely due to the fact of the nudity, gay sex, and a couple of surreal sexual scenes. In any event, it has found its way to DVD and I highly recommend this to anyone, gay or straight.
Aaron lands in L.A. with three other "elders", willing to give up television, radio, newspapers, etc left only to study and spread the Lord's word. After moving into the same complex as Christian, the cute party boy who has an appetite for one night stands, and his best friend Julie, an upcoming singer, sparks and sexual tension begin to rise. Christina tells his pals at the restaurant, Lila's, they all work at of his newfound complex mates and one of them bets he can't bed one of the "elders" and all bets are on. As the story unfolds we find out Aaron has suppressed his homosexual tendencies and he frequently wakes at night to watch Christian arrive home with one of his tricks. It isn't until Christian gets injured and Aaron takes him in, cleans his wounds, and the sexual tension between them begins to heat up. Moments they meet while doing laundry they discuss various issues regarding faith, love, and commitments and Christian begins to realize there's more to life then just one--night stands and casual sex. One of his friends is involved with a meal delivery program to AIDS patients and Christian, with his new outlook on life, begins to help out. There are some wonderful exchanges between him and his client that are really touching.
Further along the story the other elders catch Aaron and Christian in a passionate embrace and with that Aaron is shipped back home and excommunicated from the church. Tensions rise with his family and there's a fine performance by Mary Kay Place as his mother who never waivers with her position and religious beliefs. She fails to accept her son. Christian meanwhile is heartbroken and tries to reach him, as his friend Julie begins to make it in the music industry, and life goes on. Will Aaron's family finally accept him? Will Christian find true love and with who? Will Julie make it big in the biz? These are the "Latter Days of Our Lives". A wonderful story that is both heartwarming and charming I can't recommend it enough. A perfect date movie!
The film also features some great supporting roles with Joseph Gordon-Levitt (kid from Third Rock from the Sun) as one of his missionary brethren, Jacqueline Bisset, owner of "Lila's", a restaurant where Christian and his friends work and hang out, Mary Kay Place, Aaron's mother, and Rebekah Jordan, who gives a terrific performance as Christian's best friend and confident. The movie also features a fine soundtrack with songs written by C. Jay Cox, one performed by Toad the Wet Sprocket, among others. The DVD extras also include 3 music videos by Rebekah Jordan whose voice is strong and mesmerizing. Also included on the DVD are a featurette, a short film, trailers and a commentary track.

This is a great romantic love story that I watched again and again. I guess I am a romantic at heart and love to see when it is okay for a man to love another man. My only complaints about the film are small but deal with the sound, editiing and staging. There are some phases that as so muffled that can't be heard or understood--no matter how many times I have watched the film, I still can't understand them. As far as the editiing and staging is concerned, I think in some cases things could have been better set up. There really is so much symbolism in the film (which is truly great) that needs to be better set up so that the watcher catches it either on the first or second watching of the film. Since I have watched the film so many time, I think I got it all, but needs to be better set up. Why have I watched it so many times? Well, what can I say, overall, it is a wonderful, wonderful film.

Latter Days is an extremely emotional roller coaster. Steve Sandvoss gave an amazing performance, along with the other characters. I feel like I connect with this movie in so many ways. It's about finding yourself, and knowing where you belong. I thought it was so beautiful that Aaron gave up his world and his life to confront true love and happiness with Christian.Idyllic yet brilliant. I totally fell head over heals in love with Steve Sandvoss (playing Aaron) . He stunned me with his strength of attitude towards being gay whilst having such a repressive lifestyle. Although some parts of the film lack purpose and strength, it still manages to bring out its main point and quality (way to go C. Jay Cox). The two main characters were meant for each other, and this film made me think twice about destiny and the true meaning of love. My friend and I were SO emotional in the end, we bawled like a baby! Steve Sandvoss is SO HOT! And he is a graduate from Harvard also (wow!). Steve Sandvoss, we love you!

When I bought "THE TRIP" which is also a really good love story, I saw the trailer of this "LATTER DAYS" and I told myself I would buy that DVD when it comes out. I bought the DVD and I wasnt disappointed in any aspect of the movie. The acting was really effective. The story was so realistic. This movie should be watch by straight people like Pres. Bush who never believe that we gay people are just the same as them. We love and we get hurt. I really suugest everyone to atleast watch this movie. I am proud of being gay and this movie made more proud. I would like to thank the producer and director for a job well done.

I have just purchased a copy of Latter Days. I have never written before to anyone but wanted you to know that although I'm 66 years old this is probably the best movie I've ever watched. I grew up in a small town in Rhode Island and there was no way I could explain my sexual preferences to anyone. Even though this movie is about the Morman church I think I relate so much to it because it reminds me of the 50"s in a small town where secrets had to be kept. As a result I have lived my life all these years in a lie. I hope this movie is seen by young people today that are unsure about themselves and helps them come out. I have purchased a lot of movies from you but consider this the best. Please keep up the good work and I hope to see more. Again thanks. Chuck

Not since seeing Titanic have I had to walk away from such a touching film. Shot in only 24 days on a much more limited budget, this film is clearly a labor of love for every cast and crew member. Wes Ramsey and Steve Sandvoss give a performance that will move your heart. (I love you Wes...!) (I love you too, Steve...!) Jacqueline Bisset is beautiful, enduring, and kind as a mentor and Mary Kay Place is suburban, tortured, and as scary as hell about to boil over. I am so glad that this movie was made and I hope there are more like it to come. This is a movie you shouldn't miss.

It is a true film that shows opposites can attract - I still always had a tear at the end & a deep feeling when I left that maybe something like this will happen to me - finding my soul-mate no matter what his personality is like!!! Just hoping that we dont go thru what they did to find love! Definately see the movie or get the DVD!

I just saw Latter Days in Berkeley a few days ago and I have to say that it is definitely the best gay romantic movie I've ever seen. I know everyone says how Steve Sandvoss was awesome but i can't express enough how much he made the movie. Wes Ramsey was good and so were the other actors but Sandvoss was stellar. The plot and chemistry between the two actors were great too. If there was one negative thing i could say that made me kind of dissapointed, it would be that the build-up to their romance was much too quick and I felt like I had missed something when Christian tells Aaron that he loves him. In "straight" movies, usually there's at least a montage of the couple doing things(ie; getting to know one another--walking in the grass, picnic, skating...etc) but there were very few scenes contributing to the foundation of their relationship. When Christian told Aaron he loved him, me and my friend looked at each other and we both said "Where did that come from?" but of course we went with it because of the fine performances. Also, it was over just too quickly, i don't know but i wanted a 4 hour movie and more dialogue between the characters. I think that alot more could have been done with the leads then what was done. They had too little dialogue for the caliber of their performances'. Definitely watch this movie; although nothing is perfect, this is as near as I've ever seen. I've never witnessed an actor who played his role as convincingly and subtly as Steve Sandvoss. p.s. ( he's muy with the yummyness too)

Oh my G-d!. It was the best damn movie I've seen in a while. Although I'm partially biased because I love mushy romantic films, I can chalk this movie up with one of the most beloved gay films of our time, "Beautiful Thing." The movie starts off nice and slow, which is just the way I like it. It takes time to tell a good story. I almost cried three times during the film, and I normally don't cry during films. The plot, although original, is still the basic boy meets boy. Boy A falls in love with Boy B. Throw in some mishap, split the two apart, and bring them together at the end. Yes, its cliche, and yes it's done before. But who f-king cares?! If you're not the type to enjoy a movie for it's dialogue then this may not be the movie for you.
Steve Sandvoss's character, Aaron Davis is very nicely portrayed. His adorable smile, and his innocent face help to captivate and mesmerize. His attachment to his family, and the struggles that go on inside him create a human character. Not everyone grows up, realizes they're gay, and announces it to the world. Some people, unlike myself, live very straight-laced lives, and won't tell their family. Wes Ramsey's character Christian is just so shallow at first, but watching him develop from the typical "pretty boy" to someone who learns not to "equate sex with a handshake," becomes lovable as well. The rest of the cast is pretty spectacular as well. Although some characters could have used a good tweaking, such as Elder Ryder (Joseph Gordon-Levitt - Third Rock from the Sun and 10 Things I Hate About You), who's the biggest homophobe in the beginning, but when Aaron (Sandvoss) gets shipped home, he opens up and becomes friendly. I've never met a friendly homophobe, but that may be just me.
I don't think that the Mormons are targeted as sexists and bigots, but I think that certain aspects of their beliefs MAY have been exaggerated and targeted for the purposes of the film. People who argue that the movie is against the LDS Church and Mormons, may have something to rant about, but I seriously doubt if any of them have actually seen the film. If they did see the film, or any OTHER movie in the world, they would know that sometimes, things in the world aren't perfect. You've got to alter some things to fit a movie... In two simple words, JUST DEAL!
Well, to summarize, I laughed, I almost cried, and I called my best friend up and told them to see it the instant I finished. Maybe he won't like it. Maybe he will. In either case, if you took the time to read this review, I strongly urge you to see it as well. If you liked it, you can thank me later. If you didn't, I don't care that much about your opinion, because obviously you have bad taste.
Such a pity I couldn't give more than 4 stars.

If you don't walk out of this film with your heart sunken to your waistline, it is probably made of stone. By the end of the final scene, I think that most people in an out lifestyle will relate to the bigotry and discrimintation experienced in our own lives. Though at times, the acting seemed somwehat , overall, the characters were people that we all know or in Aaron's case wish we did.
Throughout the film, I kept wondering what four hunky Mormon missionaires were doing in Silverlake, as it seemed a little contrived, but then again, so is a cheap apartment in Los Angeles.
This is a great moment in gay and lesbian filmaking. Cheers!

This is a rare jewel in gay cinema. I am so tired of movies that portray religion, and in particular the Mormon church as being filled with nothing but self hating faggots. While the film did get a couple of things wrong, (such as the church court). All in all, it was fairly accurate in reactions to homosexuality in the family, and with some missionaries. It was a beautiful love story of two people, which I find genuinely refreshing. It wasn't just about getting laid, but of two people realling falling in love. Having been on a mission, and later coming out, I know the pressures, and reasons so many don't come out, which this movie helps to bring out. For all lovers out there searching for a love story, I hearily recommend this movie. Someday I hope to find my own love, and pray it is as strong as that depicted here.

Okay, Tla, you released the film, so I hope you're not going to sit on it tooooo long before issueing the DVD. I'm lucky--I was in the first LA showing! But it will, sadly, only be seen in limited distribution around the country. DVD distribution is the only way most of the gay (and non-gay) community will see it!
I won't repeat the plot, nor the excellent reviews already posted. Just be sure to bring some tissues with you when you see it--you'll need them. And you won't be wiping away only sad tears. For once a gay movie will leave you with tears of joy.
It's too bad the Golden Globes and Oscars will never give even a nod to this type of honest movie. The writer/director and actors deserve more credit for this film than they will likely ever receive. But future gay movies will be judged by how they measure up against this movie. That is a signficiant accomplishment for all involved. Thank you.

Most of the time, I don't measure queer films with the same critical eye as I do mainstream media. Except for a handful of queer films, most get an automatic thumbs-up for simply putting another notch in the belt of our community. However, such patronage is not needed for the new gay film Latter Days, writer/director C. Jay Cox (Legally Blonde).
From the beginning, Latter Days captivates with its layered characters, exceptional actors and realistic storyline. Hunky Elder Aaron Davis, a fresh young Mormon missionary from Idaho meets LA party boy, Christian. What begins as a polar opposite attraction turns into a journey of self-discovery. Aaron and Christian's magnetism stems from the fact that below superficial façades and archaic institutions are individuals seeking meaning and true love.
It's not until both characters are confronted with each other that they start to question their own set of beliefs and lifestyles. The portray of repressed Mormon, Aaron Davis, correctly reflects the psychological struggle of many who come face-to-face with the realization that they are gay. Aaron's belief in God is embedded with the belief that to love someone of the same-sex is ultimate damnation. While Aaron deals with the slippery slope to hell, Christian begins to question his own motives and shallowness. Christian hits a chord for all humanity when he says, "LA is a city where everybody dances with one eye on the door. Like we're all waiting for something better to walk in. But would we even recognize it if it did?"
To date, Latter Days is one of the few queer films that properly attempts to encapsulate the emotion and complexities of coming into oneself as a gay person. More than a film, an accomplishment for the gay community. -Lesley Roberts, LesbianAlliance.com

So many films follow certain formulae as a blueprint to success while forfeiting the more abstract, but equally important, elements of humanity: heart, soul, truth, meaning... give them whatever names suit you. They are as essential yet ephemeral in filmmaking as we all know them to be in our own lives. "Latter Days" is a truly rare gem in queer cinema; a film that's been able to distill a flavor of all that into a great Hollywood movie.
While following tried and true formulaic, "Hollywood-style" models taught at every reputable film program around the country since time immemorium, "Latter Days"' author and Director, CJ Cox, has gone that crucial, mysterious extra step, to infusing his story with a near complete retinue of emotion and heart, soul and truth.
You cannot watch this film all the way through and not see something of your own equally unique and important life experience displayed there. How CJ has done this is as much a mystery as how the film was shot, cut, scored, and finished in such a way as to accentuate the truth that was on the page from the beginning.
It's chemistry. Wonderful, unexplainable chemistry. Sometimes, when miracles come your way, to borrow from a repeated statement in the film, you just have to accept them graciously and let them be what they are.
Chemistry is also quite strongly apparent within and between all of the cast members - they are ASTOUNDING. The two male leads give a depth and honesty to their burgeoning affection - okay, to their HOT lovemaking, too - that makes you want to jump out of your seat, you're rooting for them so adamantly. The singing and the songs are superb, and the supporting players give heft and realism to the telling of the tale; to the world in which they (and we with them) live.
All that to say, when the final scene fades into the beginning of the end credits, you won't feel so much like you've seen a Hollywood flick as that you've seen a filmed slice of life - life as you've seen it or known it; life as it sometimes is and shouldn't be; life as it can be and sometimes, on those rare, glorious occasions, actually is.
"Latter Days" is my family's pick for best queer film of 2003 (realizing there's still five months to go). Having come out of seeing literally DOZENS of incredibly eclectic and fresh films at OUTFEST 2003, we feel THIS film is the one sure to be on everyone's Queer Top Ten of The Decade, if not possibly beyond. Look for it to come your way - you won't be sorry.
