This screwball comedy harkens back to the days of Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn (who may be turning over in their respective graves with that comparison) as a hunky straight guy pretends he's gay to get a date with a woman who only likes to hang out with gay men. Caleb just wants to meet a nice girl now after a bad experience. He goes to a party with his gay best friend and roommate Kyle (the adorably out Jim Verraros of "American Idol" fame) and spies Gwen (Stiles) as she throws her latest gay boyfriend out of the bedroom. Kyle explains to Caleb that Gwen only seems to like gay boys and he convinces Caleb he must pretend to be gay to get Gwen's attention, and it does. Caleb is so convincing that Gwen decides to fix Caleb up with her own gay best friend Marc (Carnes), a super-stud. And to top off the whole ridiculous situation, Kyle has a long-standing crush on Marc, who doesn't even seem to remember his name. Suffice it say, this is quite a date! Combining plenty of adorable gay boys with some seriously madcap humor makes Eating Out a great bet.

Now that "Sloppy Seconds: Eating Out II" and "Eating Out III" All You Can Eat" are out, I thought it would be a good idea to go back and look at the movie that brought about the sequels (and there are more yet to come.
"Eating Out" (Ariztical Entertainment) is cheesy but very funny and enjoyable. It is upbeat and had me laughing and that is good. The dialog is smart; the film is well cast and well acted.
Caleb is not a happy man. He constantly strikes out with girls so he decides to take a tip from his gay roommate and pretends to be gay because, as we all know, don't we, that girls love gay men. After all, it is easier for a gay man to score with a woman than a straight man. When Caleb is suddenly outed, he becomes the object of a sex hunt by gay men and fag hags (I hate that term but it fits). What follows is ridiculous situation after ridiculous situation. Ultimately Caleb is outed to his parents at a diner party but as the whole thing begins to overwhelm, there is resolution and a happy ending.
The two leads are very good looking and hot men but the reviews for this film have not been kind. Maybe a light, fluffy movie is not to be considered worthy of a good review. It reminded me a bit of the teen comedies of the 60's and 70's (yes I can remember them) but with a gay twist-boy-wants-girl-who-wants-boy-who-wants boy.
There is a phone sex scene that has received a lot of hyped and indeed does make the audience squirm. Even though it is a bit long, it is very sexy." Eating Out" is one of those films that look good with young hunky actors who look good on camera and give decent performances. The film takes place basically indoors so there is not a lot of external photography.
I suppose if I have to pick fault with the film. It is with some of the inane dialog. There is a lot of slang used and it is annoying and with coming out of some of the mouths of the good looking characters, it makes the cast look a bit superficial. There are also some really bad jokes and one-liners, one about HIV that is somewhat appalling.
With that said, I, by and large, enjoyed the film but I will add that I do think it could have been much, much better.

This is a modern day love comedy with both gay and straight overtones. Shakespare would love this story line, totally. This film has managed to capture the true complation of love in the world today! Totally enjoyable! A Must See!!

Why is it trying to be a romantic film when you only feel contempt for the characters? Especially with a story like that. If the film was a book, it'd be in the bargain bin or trash.

While I didn't care for Jim Verraros, the other three leads were terrific. And for gay men/straight women looking for some eye candy, Scott Lunsford and Ryan Carnes are ferociously cute. Sure, it's silly and at times preposterous, but it also cracked me up, and I got to like the characters. This movie is pure fluff, but it's damn good fluff!

I just watched "Eating Out," and after reading all of these harsh reviews about it, I decided to write my first online review of a movie in order to express my total opposition towards the majority of these reviews. I am not the kind of person who will be comparing this movie to other gay-themed movies. I am a 21-year-old college student who likes mainstream pop culture, blockbuster movies, and hit TV shows, and I watch movies to relax and temporarily escape any drama that's going on in my life. It was witty, it was funny, and there were all of these twists and turns in the storyline that kept you wondering how it was all going to turn out. I really enjoyed this movie, and it did exactly what a good movie sets out to do. I was entertained, it got me thinking, and it gave me a temporary mental vacation from the world around me. If you're interested in seeing this movie and you share the same interests that I do, then get the movie. The acting was well done, the lighting was fine (honestly, I don't know what some of these other reviewers are talking about), and I just flat out loved the movie.

Check out STRAIGHT-JACKET instead, or if you're in it for the skin (which is really the only reason to watch this thing), then check out BEVERLY KILLS, which showcases a ton of cute, naked boys but is actually smart and funny. And I wanted to like this movie so much.

Since when did it become fashionable or even funny for a straight guy to pretend he is gay in order to get the girl? The whole concept is insulting and demeaning to both gay men and straight women. Let's put aside the fact that the plot is totally unbelievable, this storyline has been done before by mainstream straight Hollywood with funnier and somewhat endearing results. From start to finish this movie is second rate, from the "wrong side of the tracks" looking locations to the "just got my script, don't know my lines" acting. It's a shame that too many gay indie movies are following this pattern; cute over content, stylish over substance. My hope is that this movie will be resigned to where it belongs; a one liner in a movieography of gay films under the heading "Full Frontal Nudity".

Incredibly disappointing movie. Didn't laugh a single time. Poor script, terribly acted, and painful to watch. Cinematography was often amateurish--check out the scenes that are so poorly lit that you can barely see what's going on. The audio volume also fluctuates during at least three scene changes. The only saving grace was about ten seconds of cute shirtless guys, and one semi -nteresting male kiss. You'll find, however, that you're looking at your watch and hoping that the movie to be over soon, rather than actually watching this "worst of" front runner.

I thought the movie Eating Out was going to be a B rated movie because it had some cute guys in it - which it did. Yet it was not a B rated movie and had some redeeming qualities. I think it is pretty real of what a desperate man will do to get to a woman he cares for, and I know of men who have done it. I thought the actress as "fag hag" was a bit overdone, but I don't have many fag hag friends. There was humor, but I think the pain that the actor "Kyle" portrayed showed that gay men have the same pains and anxieties about dating. I am not sorry I bought this movie from TLA Video.

A great film, but there is a question of whether or not the DVD is edited. The answer is in the DVD distributor's website which says there are two editions: "Edit Cover" and "Kiss Cover," the former with no nudity & BOTH going to freeze frame in the post-title scene. I found the freeze to last a least a minute while, on the comentary track, the actors continue to talk about what is happening on screen. Hey, distrubutors, how about a 3rd and complete version.

I found this film neither sexy or a comedy. Scott Lunsford as the object of lust is certainly attractive and game, but his storyline's inept and most of the characters are pigs: from his stilted sitcom family with the ever-ready-for-a-pathetic-joke sister to a woman he's after who is a completely unsympathetic cunt; screwing around with her gay friend's boyfriends, not particularly attractive, and what's with her hair?
Jim Verraros plays the gay roommate of the straight boy longing for more and Ryan Carnes gets to have sex with the straight boy while he's having lousy phone sex with the bimbo fag hag. Once the sex is over, he's back to totally straight, and I'm back to one more bad film ripping off a gay audience.

I bought this movie the other day, having read many reviews that proclaimed it a fantastic love story of epic dimensions. I must say this movie was horrid! The plot was threadbare, the acting was, at best, lacking in ability, and while there was some eye candy and a couple of nice kissing and love scenes it was not worth the price of buying this DVD. I collect gay cinema and I'm sure this one will collect a LOT of dust just sitting on the shelf, so unless you collect, or if you just want to waste money, I suggest that you rent or just skip this movie all together.

I just rented this movie in high anticipation after reading all the great reviews on this site. Words like "fantastic" "great movie" "brilliant acting" were used. So it's no wonder my expectations were high. Well, once again what a great disappointment. This movie was bad in every sense of the word. The only saving grace was the guy who played Marc (Ryan Carnes) who I felt sorry for having to star in this mess. It's no wonder when this movie was released last year it was trashed by many critics, and rightly so.
I know this movie was meant to be a light hearted comedy. But after giving up an hour and a half of my life, I now want it back. This movie was not smart, it was not witty or slightly intelligent. And the language used was harsh and nasty.
I found the acting to be wooden and and cringe worthy, especially from Emily Stiles who played the "fag hag" I felt embarrassed for her. In fact, her much talked about phone sex scene came off as homophobic and pure nonsense. I felt so badly for the Marc character during this whole segement, because he really liked Caleb but was just that dumb homosexual taken for a straight ride.
And a word of note to American producers of gay movies, it's time to move away from the male sex organ. I'm quite sick and tired of american gay movies saturated with all sex and no substance. I know it's a way to distract, and has worked quite well for some time, but the buying public is catching on. Lets start producing some decent stuff. And finally, american actors really need to know how to kiss on camera with passion. The kissing during the movie was not convincing. But at least we were thrown a little something at the end credits with the character Marc and Kyle making-out. But why at the end credits is anyone's guess.
There are so few American made decent gay movies. I think I can count them on one hand. I'm still waiting.
"Eating Out" and "Harry and Max" have been so high for so long on the TLA top ten list it just goes to show that here in the USA we'll just about settle for anything.

Ok - why buy a movie I'm not sure I'm gonna like in the first place? Becuase i'm a collector, that's why.
That being said, except for a few things, the movie really was enjoyable. It wasn't bound to become a classic, there are no great life lessons. But there is good entertainment value and it's worth as many viewings as any (straight) late show offering.
Caleb (mr 6-pack) just plain looks uncomfortable around other guys - even his best bud roommate. Tiffani, (who is NOT "all that and a bag of chips") turning down Caleb makes NO sense whatever. But I guess SOMEONE had to turn the boy down to get the story going. Gwen is over the top and distracting in a way that kept pulling my attention out of the scene.
But the real love affair of the movie - between Kyle and Marc - is handled well and even comes up with a surprise twist.

I think "Ben" must have a major chip on his shoulder to say the things he did in his review! The whole concept is unusual and a bit unrealistic but that doesn't detract from it one bit. QAF is not very realistic but it is still very entertaining. Same here. I couldn't stop laughing during several scenes. As the reveiwer above said, it isn't over when the credits start to role. I do wish there could have been more nudity esp some backsides but still a highly recommended film.

This film insults both gays and fag hags while pretending to be a comedy. I suppose they figure they can get away with it by throwing in a few laughs. But be ready to be turned off by this film. The production values are good, and if you like cute guys, then this film might be for you. But cute guys can be found anywhere. The idea that a straight guy has to play gay to get the fag hag girl who wouldn't look at him otherwise certainly demeans fag hags everywhere with the idea that they don't have lives of their own, especially sex lives, because they are too busy catering to their gay friends. And gays are insulted when the girl has to get on the phone to get the guy "excited" while the other guy goes down on him. That any man, gay or straight, needs phone sex from a woman to get into a gay sex scene is downright insulting. By the way, once the fag hag learns that the supposedly gay guy is really straight, whey would she fall into his arms? The way she has been defined in this film, one would expect her to run the other way. And maybe she should have.
