Lost Everything

Lost Everything might put you in mind of the Floridian pulp-lit of Elmore Leonard or Carl Hiaasen. Based in Miami, with numerous characters of ill-repute, the film feels like an adaptation of the long-lost, gay-themed novel that neither of them actually wrote. Whether or not this was the intention of director/co-writer Kim St. Leon is irrelevant ? the film works either way.

Gay movie-star Brian Brecht (played by Mark Whittington) is desperate to keep his public image deep in the closet. That doesn't stop him, however, from picking up a super-cute bartender from his hotel lobby. Little do Brian or the bartender know that their seemingly innocent tryst will set a chain of events into motion involving tabloid bloodhounds, Hollywood insiders, a fame-hungry lavender girlfriend, a pair of business-minded assassins, a gay couple attempting to live a happy, peaceful life, a sleazy talent agent, and a bloated anti-gay Christian activist.

All of these disparate souls will cross paths and converge in this enjoyably pulpy indie which manages to capably communicate an ambitiously expansive story, featuring many interconnected strands, on a very small budget.

This movie was an audience favorite when I saw it at the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival. It has a great plot with several story lines intersecting in unexpected ways. The actors may not be household names (yet), but they deliver some very strong performances (and some of them are really hot as well).
