Fernando, a solitary ornithologist, is looking for endangered black storks along a remote river in northern Portugal when he is swept away by the rapids. Rescued by a couple of Chinese pilgrims, he plunges into a dark, eerie forest, trying to get back on track. But as he encounters unexpected and uncanny obstacles and people who put him to the test, Fernando is driven to extreme, transformative actions. Gradually he becomes a different man: inspired, multifaceted, and finally enlightened.

Reasons to Buy

  1. João Pedro Rodrigues is the same wildly original filmmaker behind To Die Like a Man, Two Drifters and the controversial, highly explicit 2000 hit O Fantasma.
  2. Like O Fantasma, The Ornithologist doesn't skimp on the nudity and sensuality. Lead actor Paul Hamy might have been cast just for how amazing he looks in a pair of wet briefs.
  3. A heady and positively gorgeous reimagining of the myth of Saint Anthony of Padua as a modern-day parable of sexual and spiritual transcendence, The Ornithologist had its world premiere at the Locarno International Film Festival, where it won the Silver Leopard for Best Director.
