Michael (Nicholas Braun) and Matty (Hunter Cope) have been best friends since they were kids and now as high school students, they want to have sex. They want to lose their virginity before the prom. Matty shares that he is gay with Michael but this does not affect their friendship. Now Matty's coming out gives the chance of some cute "dick jokes" and there is a scene of Michael watching gay porn in an attempt to understand how gay guys have sex.

Michael's naiveté is both sweet and cute. His father walks in on him watching the porn and the two try to speak over the grunts and moans on the film. It is so good to see Michael trying to understand his friend rather than being judgmental or upset about him. His father remains somewhat deadpan which shows his acceptance-he even tells Michael that he will love him no matter what. It would have been wonderful if they had been able to keep this tone but unfortunately it does not.

"The film's quirkiness and repeated displays of bro-ism in action may hinder the potential for a more subtle approach to the potentially challenging issue the story depicts, but there are bright spots, such as the moral center represented by Matty's ex-girlfriend and Michael's eventual crush, Em (Dakota Johnson)" who accepts Matty's sexuality, gives him advice and even hooks him up.

It seems somewhat a necessity that every high school teen comedy that comes out of Hollywood must have a gay character. The plot has the usual "getting laid before the prom" theme. After the initial panic Michael is desperate to show that he is okay with his friend's sexuality, and drags him to a couple of local gay bars to prove it. What he is not so happy about is that Matty does get laid; first with his ex-girlfriend who Michael now wants to pursue for himself and then with good-looking Greg a 'straight acting' guy he bonds with at a demented Mexican wrestling match.

There are some wonderful one-liners and overall, the movie is fun and "cute". It's nice to see a movie that's about homosexuality and features a gay main character and does not treat it like it's a big deal. It's basically just like any other teenage comedy, dealing with typical teenage issues and features the same sort of comedy as most other, generic, high school comedies.

The movie treats everything almost as a non-issue and doesn't really show any of the true struggles and emotions a real person would go through at that age, when coming out of the closet to friends and parents. At time it seems flat and does not seem to help anybody struggling with his or her sexuality. It glosses is glossing over a lot and everything is dealt with as comedic. I am quite sure all the intentions in making this movie were good but...but some gays could find it offensive in the way it looks at issues and some of the characters. Yet it is entertaining. I just wanted it to be better.
