Showgirls: Fully Exposed Edition

This relentlessly bad and wildly camp extravaganza is one of the most cheesily twisted films to come out of Hollywood since Myra Breckinridge and Beyond the Valley of the Dolls. The rags-to-nipple clamps tale (and raunchy update of All About Eve) centers around the tough-talking Nomi (Elizabeth Berkley), a brain-dead bleached blonde Barbie doll who is lured to the bright lights, fast living and tacky lifestyle of Las Vegas. Blessed with spunk, a curvacious body and piston-gyrating hips, Nomi - beginning at a sleazy lap dance dive - steadily claws up the greased pole of success, going from trailer trash tramp to glittery star. Along this road kill of broken dreams, Nomi finds herself the object of interest from Crystal (Gina Gershon), the coke-sniffing, leering star/slut of the Vegas strip who happily wallows in her own hedonism. But Nomi sets her sights on Zack (Kyle MacLachlan in a look and hair-do that suggests he's auditioning for the next Adolf Hitler bio), Crystal's boyfriend. Hearing lines like, "It must be weird not having anyone cumming on you," Nomi knows she's made it to the top. Oh - did I mention that we're treated to one of the most graphic (not to mention sorely misplaced) scenes in Hollywood history within the film's first 10 minutes? Very, very charming. Much was made of the film's vile portrayal of leering "lipstick lezzies". For an evening neither you nor the unsuspecting friends you to watch this screamingly awful and entertaining travesty will ever forget, we suggest you put on your best "Ver-sayce", and pick this up now.

Elizabeth Berkley snarls, shrieks and humps her way through this gorgeous trash epic like a lubed-up wolverine. Acres of naked flesh, unbelievably filthy dialogue and a deliciously compelling how-corrupt-show-biz-is storyline are the key selling points here, along with Gina Gershon, the only cast member who realizes she's in a camp classic and subsequently oozes wicked diva magic as Nomi's arch-rival and obligatory lesbo crush Cristal Connors. It's so refreshing to see a B-grade bitches-behind-bars-type script given glossy $40 million blockbuster treatment. Berkley gives the lead role her awful all--- she even did her post-production looping topless. The fact that this film exists is a constant source of joy for me. The fact that MGM didn't bother to record any audio commentary from St. Paul Verhoeven a constant source of misery. Screw AFI and Leonard Maltin-- SHOWGIRLS is the reason cinema was invented!
