A New Twist to an Old Story

Mark Blane wrote, directed and stars in "Cubby", a coming of age queer dramedy. An immature 26-year-old relocates to New York on false pretenses and discovers who he really is. "Cubby" features a gay babysitter, a fictional male sex worker, and a six-year-old boy. Director Blane has stated that "the film's mission is to challenge viewers to see the complexity of human relationships ? and indeed it does so.

When we first meet Mark (Blane), he's an absent-minded artist who has lived under his mother's demands and rules. Through his interactions with the newcomers in his world (and a bad habit), he ultimately becomes aware of who he is and what he's capable of as an artist, a caretaker, and a romantic partner.

Blane's performance carries the film through bad dialogue and awkwardly timed jokes and takes us on Mark's journey of self-discovery and leaves us with food for thought about our own lives and the relationships that have formed us.
