Cabaret: 40th Anniversary Special Edition

Classic musical based on gay writer Christopher Isherwood's autobiographical novel Berlin Stories. Fosse 's splashy musical adaptation of Christopher Isherwood's Berlin Stories of 1930s Berlin stars an effervescent Liza Minnelli as nightclub singer and carefree bohemian Sally Bowles and Michael York as Isherwood's alter ego Brian Roberts. Brian's bisexuality is touched upon (although a bit too evasively) when he and Sally meet the wealthy, debonair Maximilian (Helmut Griem). The musical numbers performed at the Kit Kat Klub are just some of the film's rousing highlights, a collection of great songs belted by both Minnelli and Academy Award winner Grey as the devilishly cynical Master of Ceremonies.

If you own a widescreen T.V. or plan to one day, DO NOT BY THIS DVD! It is definitely mislabled. It proports to be "Enhanced for Widescreen TVs" (Anamorphic Widescreen), and it definitely is not! And the picture quality on a widescreen television is abysmal! I'm returning my copy and insisting on a refund!

This DVD is represented to be Enhanced for Widescreen which it is not. Warner Brothers has cashed in on the success of Chicago by repackaging their previous edition of Cabaret in a new jacket design, however, nothing has changed. The picture quality is great if you are watching a small screen television but when watching it on a widescreen, the picture is downright lousy not to mention the sound ain't that fabulous either. Warner's promised us a special edition and gave us nothing for our money. They just didn't deliver on their promise. I feel ripped off.

This was an amazing film. Probably my favorite movie musical of all time. But musical or not, it was a great movie. Liza Minelli and Michael York are perfect for their roles, and this is a rare musical where the characters and story comes first. The songs--which include "Money, Money," "Maybe This Time," and of course "Cabaret--are pretty great as well. I also enjoyed the extras on the DVD--interviews and test footage.
