No one is going to call 1313: Nightmare Mansion a masterpiece, but it does carry a certain level of subversive fun. Directed in only three days (seriously... just three days) by erotic horror maestro David DeCoteau (a capable genre veteran who seems to have a lot of fun churning out C-grade schlock at a fevered pace), this movie is light on realistic dialog and exciting plot points, but packed with beautiful, barely-dressed boys.
On the last day of school, Saddler (Stephan White) ? the mysterious new boy in town ? invites six different archetypical buddies over to his gorgeous mansion for a party. When the guests arrive, however, they seem to black out. They wake up in only their underwear and soon encounter Sadler ? who seems to have an intimate knowledge of their secret desires. Saddler tempts and seduces each of them into making decisions that may or may not be against their best interests (including some bare-chested boy-on-boy fondling). The guests don't know that Saddler is the descendant of a 300-year-old victim of the Salem Witch Trials ? and looking to use his new buddies as sacrifices to bring his dead mother back from the grave.
A Merchant/Ivory production it ain't. The performances are all pretty bad ? and one gets the impression that no-one involved in the production is taking their work too seriously. But the boys weren't really cast for their dedication acting ability. They all look good in a pair of tighty-whities ? and that, friends, is the selling point of 1313: Nightmare Mansion - and the ensuing 1313 series.

Well, I guess it is unanimous: David DeCoteau has settled on a formula: find 6-7 hotties somewhere that will strip down to 1960 style white briefs (the large ones, not briefs), tuck in any hint of anything inside those briefs, walk slowly this way, then slowly that way, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, caress you chest, stomach & arms, repeat, repeat, repeat, find some annoying non-scary noises turned up loud, provide zombie words for them to say, throw a female in for no good reason, have the guys disappear one at a time and then just end the movie.
We're on to you, David. How many times are you going to fool us? Not many more. If you should ever release another decent movie, like a few of your earlier movies, it will be too late and no one will buy it.

As a long time fan of David DeCoteau's I will admit his films can be Hit or Miss (Dreamaniac, Brotherhhod V). Happily, 1313:Nightmare Mansion is more than a Hit, it is one of Dave's Best. Like most of Dave's films, casting is most important and the group here really shine. Much will be written about Judson "Fabio" Birza, who really has such natural charisma and charm you can't help but love him. The real STAR of the film however is Stephan White as the Demonic Saddler. Stephan brings many layers and depth to what could have been a one-dimensional role, I Iove the way he aproaches each character differently as he hands party invites out to his chosen victims. It also helps that he is Devilishly Handsome and has the body of an Underware Model. The remaining cast members are all excellent, and do well in helping to maintain the Dream-like Atmosphere created by the film makers. Filming a movie as if it were a dream is very tricky, sometimes it works, some times not. Here it works very well. Dave's Camera floats about the house catching Young Hot Guys walking around in their underware (sounds like one of my dreams), and like everything in a dream it seems OK and natural.
On a personal note, I am very glad that there is no nudity in Dave's films. I think a Hot Guy wearing nothing but Black Briefs is far sexier than a Hot Guy wearing nothing at all. Plus if nudity was required than 75% of the Actors he has worked with in the past probably would not have done the films at all. Dave makes Eye Candy movies, not pornos.
In closing I would like to suggest other Eye Candy movies for your Visual Entertainment : Dreamaniac, Voodoo Academy, The Brotherhood 1,2,3,and 6, The Frightening, Leeches, Speed Demons, Ring of Darkness, Killer Bash, Beastly Boyz and House of Usher.

When I buy a DVD of one of Decoteau's films I
don't expect Golden Globe material, let alone
Oscar material, just a good well made homoerotic
horror film. Judged against KILLER BASH and
HOUSE OF USHER this film is quite lame and
decidedly lackluster. I had hoped after HOU that
Decoteau's films would be not only quite
homoerotic but frank in said eroticism. Unlike
HOU this film contains no nudity and zippo
highly erotic heavy necking.
1313:Nightmare Mansion was obviously
conceived, written and shot during a lunch hour.
Also the production values are quite poor,
even for a Decoteau film. This does not
bode well for future 1313 films.
