Hanks and Ryan are reunited after Sleepless in Seattle (and actually have more than one scene together) in this genuinely sweet romantic comedy based on Ernst Lubitsch's charming 1940 comedy The Shop Around the Corner (itself based on the play “Parfumerie” by Miklos Laszio). The story is basically the same but updated for '90s sensibilities: two antagonists are brought together and fall in love in spite of themselves. Though the original device was the personals in the newspaper, here the two become acquainted through e-mail. How millennium! Ryan is the owner of a small, Upper West Side bookstore slowly going out of business. Hanks is the owner of a mega-bookstore which is contributing to its demise. How they come together makes for fetching comedy. The supporting cast of characters is very appealing, though it is the magnetism of Hanks and Ryan which propels the tale.
