Synopsis

Review

What happens when your straight friend who you're in love with decides to marry a guy who may not be the Prince Charming she thinks he is? Sigh. Dilemma, dilemma, dilemma. That is the exact problem facing Jazae, as she reunites with her college gal pals for one last hurray before Denise (said straight friend) marries her high school sweetheart, Brandon (said Prince not-so-Charming). Other issues add to the drama heap, like alcoholism, AIDS, and a group of friends trying really hard to fit together after college, with years past that have wielded big changes.

Truth Hall isn't the best movie ever made. Some of the plot feels just a little corny, and all the heavy drama made me like, "Wow, seriously? All this is happening right now?" I think huge scenarios that happen during weddings are just terribly inconvenient, not to mention a tired plot. BUT, I think multiple-award winner Truth Hall is hopefully the beginning of something really great for African-American lesbians in LGBTQ cinema – a group that has yet to really secure a stronghold in the industry. Other sources have compared director and star Jade Jenise Dixon to the next Tyler Perry, which is pretty huge. I would definitely agree that Truth Hall is along the same lines as a Tyler Perry-ish-type movie and while I think the film is a wobbly start, I really hope that it will be the launching pad for African-American lesbian cinema that will rival the successful following Tyler Perry has enjoyed.
