Straightman

Done on an extremely low budget, this gritty comedy-drama follows the lives of David (Ben Berkowitz), a comedy club worker who is a loud, opinionated, overweight lout and womanizer (yet strangely sympathetic and likable) and his best friend and neighbor Jack, a quietly thoughtful construction worker involved in a long relationship with Maxine. When Maxine leaves suddenly, the despondent Jack moves in with his buddy.

The character-driven tale looks at the men's difficulties in their sexual lives and in maintaining their often-strained relationship with insight and wit. But when Jack comes out as gay, a whole new wrinkle unfolds.

With some unusually sexy scenes and a real different approach to gay love and coming out, Straightman appeals to the "regular guy" in all of us. A wonderfully understated and knowing film ? refreshingly distant from the gay-friendly but overly familiar gym bunny world of West Hollywood and Chelsea.

This film is not interesting at all as you could imagine. In fact is about the working class and such, a guy that discover his real sexuality to his best friend and "straight" roommate, but it's really boring. The screenplay is such a waste of time, that I wouldn't recommend to anyone to buy this crap!.

Do NOT get this movie! Unless you like to see fat, freaked-out, greasy sexless men who room together in a filthy dump. There is absolutely no redeeming feature to this movie. I rented it and want the time I watching it... BACK! I saw one partially nude male ass and my weiner shrunk at that!

I don't normally write reviews, but had to respond after seeing the two other reviews of this film. These seems to be purchasers who expected high-gloss production, beefy hunks and hot action, but this is a film that focuses on incredibly realistic everyday characters, and that's precisely what makes this movie so moving. The acting is excellent, and the script well written, and the whole scenario is completely believable. For a low-budget movie, it's surprising well produced. The painful coming-out process of the lead character is one that many will relate to, and in the end it's the friendship and mutual acceptance between the "Straightman" and the gay man that makes this an enjoyable and optimistic film.

Usually, I try my best to find some redeeming factor that justifies the 2 hours I spent watching a movie. As a writer, I feel sometimes that it is my responsibility to do so. But there is not a single character, moment, reel, or line in this film that could justify paying for it, renting it...or even thinking about doing either. I've been entertained more thoroughly by George Bush. His idiocy is at least justified by his deficient mental capacities. The producers, actors, cameramen and even the gaffers should be taken to the back room of homollywood, fucked and shot. I wouldn't recommend this film to an enemy.

I really expected this to be a hot movie, but I was really disappointed. I thought it was poorly filmed and I found the acting to be poor. There was nothing about it that I liked. BORING! On the other hand, I've thoroughly enjoyed and highly recommend the other DVDs I purchased: Lillies, Gone But Not Forgotten, Friends and Family, and Deep End. I'd skip Straightman if I were you!
