Review

Director De Palma's crowning achievement is a rousing and grandly stylistic gangster movie set in crime-laden 1920s Chicago. Costner is Eliot Ness, an idealistic government agent who goes after mob kingpin Al Capone, getting a lot of help from the cop on the beat (Connery). De Niro plays Capone with over-the-top abandon, and Connery is amazing in his Oscar-winning portrayal. Garcia and Smith (both first-rate) are Ness' two other "untouchables." De Palma's train station sequence, a nod to the "The Odessa Steps" sequence in Battleship Potemkin, is a knockout. Written by David Mamet.
