Synopsis

The City of Your Final Destination, adapted from the hit novel by Peter Cameron,and brought to the silver-screen by famed duo -director James Ivory and screenwriter Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, is a cinematic masterpiece.

When doctoral student Omar Razaghi (Omar Metwally) , whose financial aid for a fellowship is dependent upon his completion of an authorized biography of late Latin American author Jules Gund, finds himself at the late authors estate he is met by an eccentric and inquisitive group. The Gund "family" is made up of Caroline (Laura Linney) the late authors wife; his mistress, Arden (Charlotte Gainsbourg); Gund's brother, Adam (Anthony Hopkins); and Adam's partner, Pete (Hiroyuki Sanada). The arrival of Omar upsets the fragile balance of mere existence that currently keeps this "family" together , and causes its members to examine each of their lives. The City of Your Final Destination, a comedy of modern manners, warmly examines life's big questions - how we fall in love, how we find a home, and how we come to know ourselves.

Review

There is nothing I love more than a beautiful film - setting, cinematography, and the overall alluring feel of a still that could be hung on the wall. The City of Your Final Destination won my heart in the very beginning through this medium. Set in the lush landscape of rural Uruguay, on the Ocho Rios estate, the film is illuminated by the haunting charm and enchanting green of the Latin American countryside. To my delight The City of Your Final Destination did not have to rest on its columns of beauty, but offered a rich plot with multifaceted characters that pull the viewer deep within the emotions of the film.

When Omar Razaghi, a doctoral student, embarks on his journey to the late author Jules Gund's estate to gain approval for a biography; he has no idea what he will encounter with the author's executors. The Gund family - comprised of tight-knit widow Caroline(Laura Linney); his naively sweet mistress Arden(Charlotte Gainsbourg); and wise homosexual brother Adam (Anthony Hopkins)- is a set of characters struggling with the authors death, the meaning of their lives, and learning how to move on.

What starts as a scholastic trip to pen a biography turns into a life changing journey of self-rediscovery. I loved this film from start to finish and would recommend it to anyone.

Omar (Omar Metwally) is a professor of literature at an University of Colorado and he tries to get legal permission to write the biography of a writer who has only had one novel published. The author's family is against the idea so Omar decides to go to South America to meet them and get their permission. He finds a dysfunctional family with many secrets and skeletons in the closet. Deirdre (Alexandra Maria Lara) arrives to see how things are going and it gets very interesting. The writer's widow, (Laura Linney) and the writer's girlfriend, Ardenia, (Charlotte Gainsbourg), the gay brother of the writer (Anthony Hopkins) and his lover (Hiroyuki Sanada) all live together on an estate far from anything else and we get a study of personalities and a look at the dynamics between there people. We also see Omar's feelings for Ardenia and the choices he is forced to make. The film is about decesions and how they influence the lives of everyone.
Based on the novel by Peter Cameron, the screenplay was written by Ruth Prawer Jhabvala and the film was directed by James Ivory. This is a good example of literary cinema.The characters all play cultured, cosmopolitan residents of a remote place in Uruguay and they seem to be constantly philosophizing and bickering. People talk a lot and we are plunged into the emotions of the characters. We realize that what we are watching is little more than a power struggle between adulterers and malcontents as they test the bonds of family as well as the boundaries that confine them.
