It is often said that lubes and gay men go hand in hand (so to speak) yet over time, guys usually settle on a certain product and company and leave it at that. But in an on-going drive to find the best in all kinds of sex toys, we embarked on an admittedly un-scientific survey to uncover what are the best lubes on the market today.
We limited the choices to the companies that market their lubes to gay men and then looked at our top selling products and made sure all the big name brands were represented. In the end, 11 kinds of water and silicone based lubes were selected for our project.
Then we found 8 ready (or soon to be ready) and willing participants – actually we didn’t need to go far; free lube and a business excuse to masturbate or butt fuck multiple times in a short amount of time had horny volunteers lining up in droves in front of my cubicle. And here are the surprising results. Please send comments on the kinds of lubes you prefer and look for further surveys in our toys section.

- OVERALL RATING & DURABILITY: Pjur Classic Bodyglide
- VALUE FOR THE MONEY & VISCOSITY: Stroke 29 Rocket Fuel
- QUALITY: Boy Butter
- PACKAGING: Boy Butter, Swiss Navy Water Based (tie)

"Good for fisting ( I imagine) but not for much of anything else."
"The actual contents are very similar to that of Stroke 29 and Boy Butter. However, those brands are much cheaper. This is a high-quality product that is, comparably, overpriced"
"Your grandfather's lube - it is greasy and a little slimy but long lasting (that's describing the lube, not your grandfather.) Difficult to clean up - not a good choice in the age of water and silicone based lubes. I'm a fisting virgin, but I hear that is what it is best for."
"It's not condom-safe, it doesn't taste good and it's less durable than Pjur. I'd say that it's inferior for JO and fucking and the same for oral play mixed in -- not very good."
"While the packaging leaves a lot to be desired (comes in a white plastic tub with snap-cap that feels cheap) the logo is pretty bracing - two silhouettes of beefy men flexing their guns - and looks like something tough guys would use."
"too watery - frequent re-application - not long-lasting- messy clean-up"
"Great! I love this one. It's condom safe and super slick"
"Gun oil You will not likely have to re-apply after the first coating. Plus, the packaging is badass. You'll be proud to display it on your shelf for all to see."
"Slick, slick, slick….but oily and a bitch to clean up afterwards."
"Very similar to Pjur, but less durable. The packaging can open in your backpack and make a major, un-washable mess"
"Liked it much better than the water-based formula. Being that this is silicone-based, it lasted longer for me. The bottle is butt-ugly (semi-opaque brown) and looks like something you'd find in a "Little House on the Prairie"-era medicine cabinet."
"really good product"
"Hands down my favorite!"
"Having to screw off the cap each time you want to use this product can be cumbersome. The packaging could be more easily accessible, but the lube itself is liquid gold. You won't need to re-apply. This stuff will last you a long while."
"Nice and smooth - great feeling on one's cock and long-lasting, one of the better ones on the market."
"the best lube overall - condom-safe and long-lasting. The one drawback is that it doesn't taste good - and it's questionably healthy to ingest" "Silicone based lube, I tried it with both a condom on as well as free-hand. No odor, and felt great going on. Felt slick initially, but then took on a more oily feeling than I was expecting. (Took a few washdowns to clean up afterwards.)"
"excellent product- easy clean-up- a little dab will do ya"
"Really good, just doesn't last as long as the other silicone-based ones"
"Swiss Navy Silicone will make your dick feel great. The pump, however, is angled in an odd way."
"Try not to spray it everywhere when you apply it."
"Like all silicone lubes, long lasting and super slippery, but a bitch to clean off"
"Very similar to Pjur-- with all the same drawbacks and advantages. It does have a great little pump top for dispensing"
"Simple clean packaging, nice logo and clear tube, but it was a bitch getting the paper safety-cap off (I keep my nails trimmed) which really annoyed me. No real scent, which is good, but even though it's silicone based, I kept having to add spit to keep "
"not an easy clean-up"
"Nice water-based lube, not too thick or thin and doesn't dry too sticky"
"This is not nearly as easy to deal with as the silicone Gun Oil. There might be a bit too much water added. It gets messy and you will likely need to re-apple."
"Loved it - not greasy, long lasting, very slick and doesn't even taste bad!"
"I'm not a big fan of water-based lubes, but this one ranks low for two reasons; the bottle can open and spill easily. You have to use water-based for oral/job play and this just doesn't taste good."
"The blue bottle is nice, but the label/sticker makes it look cheap. Has an aroma I did not like at all, kind of medicinal. Didn't try using it with a condom, but it felt good in my hand. I had to reapply, and the label notes it stays slick longer; I disagree."
"good product; a bit thick, however"
"I didn't really like this on, I had to reapply often and it dried really sticky"
"I had to re-apply this lube at least three times during one session. Keep a thick towel handy, because this provides a messy experience."
"A sticky feel and dries out quickly"
"ID is one of the two best water-based lubes. The taste is semi-OK (at least it's not poison). It stays on better than Gun Oil and its easy to clean up when it spills. But, and this is a big but, it dries sticky."
"Packaged in a suntan lotion-like inverted bottle, with the application tip end as the base it rests on. Pleasant mild aroma, easy to use bottle (flip the cap, apply and flip close). Used it both with a condom and without for jerking off."
"nothing special about it; a bit sticky; not an easy clean-up"
"Good one! Nice and slick and slow drying."
"You can't beat this lube for the low price! It's thicker than most water-based lubricants. The pump can prove a tiny bit cumbersome if you're not careful about your force and aim, but you'll love stroking with it."
"A great, dependable lube although it dries out faster than other water-based lubes. I love this company's packaging. When I used to be out and about, a top like this would have been great. It looks entirely safe. The taste is the same as the others. This is probably the best water-based lube. This dries well."
"Simple clean packaging like the silicone version, nice logo (all blue as opposed to the red stripe on the other version) and clear tube, but again it was a bitch getting the paper safety-cap off. I usually find silicone based lubed are more pleasing to me"
"despite the water-base, it's not an easy clean-up"
"I liked this one best with my toys."
"Even though it's called "Wet," this lube is pretty thick and long-lasting. Also, it comes in a phallic tube that can double for a dildo - if you're so inclined."
"This is a water-based gel - and does not hold up - sticky, need to reapply a lot, dries out."
"very similar to ID - dries sticky, needs to be replenished, but it tastes OK and it's good for safe fucking"
"I've used this in the past, so I'm not sure why I even bothered testing this. For me it falls in the "ok" category. It's a tried and true crowd pleaser, but I think that has more to do with" marketing/advertising dollars than anything else."
"Too sticky; not slick or smooth like a heavy motor oil; nasty clean-up"
"Not my favorite by any means. I guess if it came down to this one and hand lotion I would use it"
"This product is simply not worth the price. You're paying for the "TitanMen" label more than anything else. You can get equally efficient - maybe MORE efficient - lubes for much cheaper."
"The only plus is that it actually looks like cum."
"Creamy but dries out really quickly. Needed to put a lot on to keep going and even then, it was not the best sensation."
"Not a very good lube for anything. The packaging can open when it wants to. It tastes bad, it's not good for JO. It's best for fucking --- where all but the oil based lubes are generally good."
"Great look to this line, very eye pleasing, looks good on counter or in medicine cabinet. The lube itself looks a bit like a cumshot - it's kind of cloudy/clear, and feels like a load. (A good thing.) "
"not particularly long-lasting"
"I love this one for wanking! It's awesome!"
"I have abandoned other lubes - mid jerk session - because they weren't taking care of me the way that my Stroke 29 Rocket Fuel does. It comes in an awesome little package that you could pass off as hair gel if you needed to."
"Creamy, long-lasting, nothing feels better between my hands and my cock"
"like the container says, it's good for JO. Drawbacks - needs to be replenished, will stain and the 29 strokes thing - it's bullshit"
"From the makers of Gun Oil, can you tell how much I loved Stroke 29? First off I love the name - it got me hard before even touching myself! The packaging looks like a Noxzema jar (peel off the label and mom will never know… though overnight guests looking for an overnight cream will have problems."
"superior; easy clean-up; durable"
"Really greasy but doesn't dry and is great for sex."
"Buy some Boy Butter for the novelty alone. You can keep this in the fridge and no one will realize the difference… until they eat it. It will also make you and YOUR BOY feel awesome."
"Creamy and long-lasting -- quite different kind of lube then the rest of the pack"
"same as stroke 29 for me -- actually less durable"
"The packaging is fantastic, though a bit unwieldy if you're keeping it by your bedside. It looks and feels just like a tub of margarine or butter would. It's very eye-pleasing, and would look at home in a fridge. (I don't recommend cooling it down, though.)"
