Review

With his second feature, director Ritchie is back in the same territory as his high-energy debut Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels: colorful gangsters, fast-paced action, jet-black humor, lightning-quick editing and lots of gun play. And while one could complain that Snatch is a carbon copy of Ritchie's first film, that doesn’t take away from the sheer fun of this knock-'em-dead heist tale. The story follows what happens when Franky Four Fingers (Del Toro) stops off in London on his way to New York to deliver a stolen 84-carat diamond. Soon, an Irish boxer (Pitt) who you can't understand, a crime boss (Ford) with a penchant for pigs, a boxing promoter (Statham) just trying to stay alive, and a crazed Russian gangster (Sherbedgia) all enter the picture to further complicate and amuse. Ritchie knows how to sustain action at a fast clip, and the film moves at remarkable speed. Always in danger of self-imploding, Snatch is more accessible and fluid than Lock, Stock. And while it may not appear as fresh, like many of the wonderfully drawn characters suggest, appearances can be deceiving.
