D-Day, June 1944. American troops prepare to invade the beaches at Normandy. This would be the singular defining moment of WWII. The first 25 minutes of the astonishingly powerful and brilliantly realized Saving Private Ryan, which is an unflinching look of this pivotal battle, is crafted with such realism, raw emotion and technical superiority that it literally blows nearly every other American war film out of the water. It not only changes the way we think of war, but also redefines a genre with the consummate brush stroke of an artist at the absolute peak of his abilities. What follows during the next 145 minutes is just as riveting. Giving a performance of great depth and subtletly, Hanks plays an Army sergeant who must lead an eight-man unit through enemy territory to search for and rescue a G.I., Private Ryan (Damon), whose three brothers have all been killed in combat and who now has a pass home. Spielberg has certainly done his homework. His re-creations of WWII battles, the camaraderie of the men, the threat of death around the corner (which is scarier than any dinosaur attacking in Jurassic Park) flow in a narrative logic rarely captured on film. Spielberg doesn't hesitate in showing the torture and hell of war, but he never moralizes nor criticizes (a magnificent scene in which a Jewish soldier confronts Nazi prisoners suggests this). His ensemble is extraordinary, with Sizemore, Burns and Davies (who silently steals the film with his tortured coward) most memorable. Saving Private Ryan is Spielberg at his best, and, for that matter, American cinema at its best.
