It should come as no surprise that the first film Hanks has written and directed is a witty, nice, beguilingly old-fashioned movie-movie. After all, double Oscar-winner Hanks is a witty, nice, old-fashioned movie star. What may come as a surprise is that Hanks has made a well-crafted and toe-tapping charmer. That Thing You Do! chronicles the rise, quick star status and even quicker slide of a pop band in 1964. With Necco-wafer colored cinematography and lovingly rendered period detail, the film moves at a rapid clip tracking the group's roots in smalltown America and their ascension to the top of the charts. With That Thing You Do!, Hanks seems to know that sometimes it's hip to be square, and he's proud of it.
