With Isaac Hayes' rhythmic score in the background, this sexy and violent (always a great combo in blaxploitation) crime story stars Roundtree as John Shaft, a mean and resourceful private dick. Essentially a black French Connection, the story has Shaft hired by a ruthless drug lord (Gunn) to find his daughter, who was kidnapped by the white Mafia. Slick, action-packed urban fun. (Followed by 2 sequels, and remade in 2000)
