Review

An exciting and efficiently directed actioner, Proof of Life may be more noted for its pairing of Ryan and Crowe, who had a brief, headline-making fling. Thankfully, their real-life chemistry comes through, only adding to the many pleasures of this solid adventure tale. Ryan plays Alice, the wife of Peter (Morse), an American engineer who is supervising the building of a dam in a fictional South American country. When he is kidnapped by rebels, expert K&R (kidnap and ranson) negotiator Terry Thorne (Crowe) enters the picture. As Terry bargains for Peter's life and plans for a possible rescue, he and Alice become attracted to each other. It's Casablanca revisited as a wife is torn between her husband and the man who could save his life. But unlike many ripoffs of that classic film, Proof of Life has its own identity and features characters who you really care about. It's a good mix of romantic love triangle and thrilling action scenes.
