In 2001, bassist Jason Newsted quit the band Metallica (nicknamed "Alcoholica" for their hard-partying ways), claiming that years of physical abuse had taken their toll; he was also unhappy with the band's unwillingness to let him pursue other projects. Despite low morale, the band carried on with plans to write and record their new album at the Presidio with returning producer Bob Rock filling in on bass. But what starts as an enjoyable reunion soon deteriorates into intense episodes of petty bickering, finger-pointing, pouting, songwriter’s block, and doors slammed in anger.

In a last-ditch attempt to save the band, dorky $40,000-a-month therapist Phil Towle is employed to conduct intimate group sessions with drummer Lars Ulrich, singer and guitarist James Hetfield and lead guitarist Kirk Hammett. The results offer a glimpse into the personal lives of three vulnerable guys trying to do what's "best" for the band (such as conducting a now-infamous battle with Napster), while they also balance family and work, fight various addictions and pursue outside interests.

Whether or not you're a fan of this hugely popular band’s brand of heavy metal, you will be amused and engrossed by their struggles - and astonished that a film this honest was ever made.
