Redford is Johnson, the legendary mountain man and trapper who made war on the Blackfoot Indians after they murdered everything he loved. While taking some liberties with the original story, the film is nevertheless an inspired and entertaining tale of a man who cannot abide modern society's rules and restrictions. The film is beautiful testament to the possibility of man's oneness with the natural world and an ode to the indomitable, individual spirit. It is also an uncharacteristic western in a genre which had, at the time it was released, grown tired and repetitive.
