Review

"We must break apart the old concepts of good and evil," says the mysterious Dr. Gabriel to young and fresh Jean Jennings just before he inducts her into his pleasure cult. But the is not the beginning of Defiance (of good). Armand Weston's masterpiece of sadistic sex cinema begins with Kathy/Jean Jennings's parents shipping her off for 'observation' at a mental hospital. Little Jean's performance in this film is absolutely outstanding, as is the musical score, both of which solidify the dark and perverse atmosphere.

Kathy's first night in the institution grants her the pleasure of being gang-raped by three inmates to some awesome 70's rock. No one believes such a thing could have happened, and she is recommended for treatment at Dr. Gabriel's private institution for young people. Fred Lincoln plays the crazy guru priest of his own cult of libertine education. He gives a fantastic introductory speech to Kathy, who manages to get thrown into stockades and bare-ass whipped with a cat o' nine tails! Delicious! So begins the training that will lead her to find herself anew, breaking from old standards and being born again. She is chained in a few circumstances, whipped, sucked and fucked in a candle lit dungeon, always observed from the shadows by Dr. Gabriel. Of course, Kathy experiences a new awakening and doesn't quite want to leave when her education is through.

Some highlights include her introduction to pleasure when Dr. Gabriel leads her verbally to orgasm through masturbation. Jennings gets so into it that it is just as hot as the sex scenes. As I said above, the music is outstanding throughout. Defiance plays like a cult exploitation film as much as a porno. There is not as much fucking in this picture as in some films from this era, but that doesn't do damage to the integrity of the movie. I recommend this to anyone who enjoyed films like Behind the Green Door, The Devil in Miss Jones, and The Story of O.
