Addressing themes previously unrepresented in serious filmmaking from Hollywood -- the Gulf War and women in the military -- the intelligent and perceptive Courage under Fire is more than up to the challenge of either. In a solid characterization, Washington plays an Army commander who is investigating the case of a posthumous Medal of Honor going to a female pilot (a very effective Ryan) killed in action. What should be a simple process soon becomes complicated when witnesses begin to contradict each other's stories -- and it's uncertain if she died a hero or a coward. As Washington digs deeper to uncover the truth (which places him in conflict with military brass), Ryan's story is told in riveting, Rashomon-like flashbacks. Highlighting a marvelous ensemble, Phillips is exceptional as a soldier who knows more than he's saying.
