Review

From Everett Lewis (Luster) comes this drama celebrating queer activism in the 21st century where intolerance still prevails and prejudice can be found everywhere. FAQs follows the lives of a homeless teenage run-away, a greedy pornographer, a boyish ‘butch’ lesbian and a vigilante drag queen who tracks down queer bashers and invites them to face their "Destiny". Destiny (Allan Louis) takes in India (Joe Lia) after saving him from a queer bashing and together with her other ‘rainbow child’ Lester (Minerva Vier) they live together and become a family. After “working all day to put food on the table” Destiny drags up and with her silver pistol, patrols the streets of West Hollywood protecting “her children” and “other people’s children” from the straight jocks who chase gays for fun or bash them for the rush. Against this unconventional setup but fully functioning ‘queer family’ will India find true love or forever be a ‘cute one night stand’? Will Lester find a girlfriend and shave her legs and will Destiny find herself a man. Anything can happen and in FAQs everything does happen in a very short space of time, climaxing with our queer musketeers freeing themselves from the homophobic bonds of an oppressive society.

Everett Lewis had really done a great job here! The story is very good, the actors are gorgeous (and also cute), the acting is not bad and the love scenes are really hot... I think, this movie is better than Luster in some aspects and more dramatic. Joe Lia is really cute with Lance Lee Davis. Together they are a hot couple. Allan Louis in other hands is so unique as Destiny... and don't forget Minerva Vier is so tough as Lester. Overall, I think FAQs is one of the best gay movie I ever watched. It is so genuine. And I learn too from this movie to accept everyone as they are...

Brilliant: I'd give it ten stars if I could

Why is the average customer rating only 3 stars when all the people who reviewed this wonderful fim loved it--is it that the first reviewer simply forgot to enter a number of stars? In any case, this was the best gay film I have seen for a while. It's also one of the few films by Everett Lewis--a genuinely fine film maker--that is upbeat and hopeful (perhaps "Luster" is the other, but not entirely). FAQs is a film that shows how we take care of each other in the face of a violently homophobic culture. It's beautifully written, acted, and directed. It's moving, intense, sexy, angry, loving, triumphant. Everyone should see it; I think it's an important film. And the optional English subtitles are great: so glad TLA finally started using them on a regular basis. The dialogue on many sound tracks is often hard to understand, and if one is hearing-impaired (I hate that term) like me, they're an absolute necessity.

Warm and Endearing

This shows that a low budget film can hit the mark. Joe Lia and Allen Louis dave good perfromances as the "trainee" runaway and the Avenging Angle - Destiny, respectiverly. It showed an idealized way that gays can form family units and heal and help each other. Since am over my embittereed queendom for some years I highly recommend for people who are not jaded queens. Who want to sit down a feel good at the end of the movie. Also the commentary is excellent.

Painful & Touching

I really didn't know what to expect with this new release and what a wonderful surprise!! While this was not a big budget Hollywood movie, it had a very painful, yet touching message. If you want to see a very powerful gay movie, check this one out. The message makes up for occasional uneven editing and acting. An outstanding effort!!
