Synopsis

Like the child of a John Waters’ film, Summer Thunder is the oddly compelling story of a washed-up porn star whose penis was mutilated in a freak hot tub accident.

"I'm more than just your pharmacist." says Pharmacist John, as he tries to save another of his messed-up boys. This weirdly touching and strangely appealing film tells the tall (but clipped) tale of Billy Lee Tucker aka Fox E. Bottoms, a retired porn star with a penis problem. You see Fox E. got his dick caught in a hot tub drain as a child and he's been a mess ever since. At the ripe age of 16, he joined the stable of pornographer Colton Handle, owner of Peach Fuzz Pictures -- you can guess the specialty. For several years his films sold like crazy. Blondie in the Bathtub sealed his fame as it showcased his specialty "the deep twist". But hard times have fallen on Fox E. He's too old for chicken porn, and way too out-of-shape to segue into more adult features. Fox E. has become addicted to pain killers, is developing pot belly (which he shows off in midriff-cut t-shirts) and hangs out feeling sorry for himself all day. Then one day Fox E. goes to the drugstore for one of his regular prescriptions and the pharmacist expresses a special interest in his case. Will Fox E. turn his life around? Will he stop wearing those ugly t-shirts?

Definitely Different

Finally, a gay movie that doesn't feature a vapid muscleboy spouting lines from a lame script! THis story is a little offbeat, and the characters quickly get under your skin. I saw it at a screening about a year ago and wasn't sure what to expect... I was pleasantly surprised. It's quirky and sweet and more than a little bit sad, and a great movie overall.

Summer Thunder is without question one of the most original films to be released in recent years. The story is both playful and poignat, a truly honest depiction of a man lost in the world, and someone we can all get behind.
The characters are unusually loveable, and true to life. Just as you're laughing at the hysterical antics of a character, you're blindsided by the emotional depths of another. This movie succeds where others fail, it tells a subtle story without boring us to tears.

A friend of mine dragged me to a small screening of Summer Thunder in NYC. I was not expecting much and not looking forward to it. After about 10 minutes I realized I was in for something special. I am a serious film buff and and take it very seriously but I have never scene a film like this one. So play full, cool, silly and original. You have no clue what is going to happen from one scene to another. The technical aspects of the film are at times childishly simple but it just ads the playful style of this indie.

I am not a big fan of "queer cinema" but this is not your average boy meets boy film. Interesting faces, intriguing story and a total raw style. This is one film that you will want to watch over and over again.
