Filmmaker Karen Everett turns the camera on herself as she intelligently explores love, friendship and sex with the sexually charged, politically active and artistically influenced lesbian community. Although Women in Love focuses on Everett and her close network of revolutionary sexual dykes in San Francisco, this film identifies with queer polyamorous subcultures everywhere. As Karen approaches her 40th birthday and her seemingly long-term relationship took a new direction, she wondered if love was really supposed to last. Taking this thought even further, how did her non-monogamous desires play into these relationships?

Skillfully weaving imagery of the '80s to the new generation of lesbians romping through underground sex clubs to masturbation seminars, Everett blends her personal ebbs and flows with intimate, raw and emotional moments of sexual pleasure and tender loneliness. Included in this five year journey of self-discovery that we all somehow identify with are the leaders of lesbian porn Shar Rednour and Jackie Strano (Hard Love and How to Fuck in High Heels) and acclaimed photographer of lesbian erotica, Phyllis Christopher, who is also Karen’s ex, friend and roommate. This riveting and fearless documentary depicts one woman as she strives for love and happiness, but identifies with many women who put no borders on their freedom to love.
