Country: US Studio: Wolfe Releasing Cast: Betty DeGeneres, Evan Wolfson Director: Catherine Gray Our Rating:
SYNOPSISA film about same-sex marriage, narrated by Betty DeGeneres, mother of comedian and talk show host, Ellen DeGeneres. This educational film explores the real life stories of 20 long term gay and lesbian couples (each have been together anywhere from 10 to 55 years!), and reveals the obstacles they encounter due to not being able to marry in the U.S. Included are pertinent facts and information from specialists on this topic, including renowned civil rights attorney Evan Wolfson of The Freedom to Marry Organization, and John J. McNeill, author of "The Church and the Homosexual." Until the right of civil marriage is extended to same-sex couples in the United States, gays and lesbians will be denied over 1000 rights, benefits and equal protection under law, to which heterosexual couples are entitled.
REVIEW
Through the course of this warm yet subtly angry hour-long documentary, a variety of gay and lesbian couples in long-term relationships talk about their love & commitment and wonder why they aren't allowed the same right to marry (or adopt, or collect benefits, etc. etc.) as heterosexuals. Surprisingly, there's nothing out of the ordinary about any of these couples; they are simply living their lives and are lucky enough to have found Mr. or Ms. Right. As such, it might be a bit boring for the gay & lesbian audience, but it's perfectly geared for sharing with heterosexual friends and family who would benefit from seeing the human side of the gay rights issue.
