Casper Andreas’s (A Four Letter Word) new film, set in New York City, is the story of a fairy tale gay romance that runs off track when a troubled family member arrives on the scene.
REVIEW Sometimes relationships have a “’til death do us part” ending, and sometimes it’s a bit more complicated. Casper Andreas’s (A Four Letter Word) new film is the story of two men who fall in love fast and hard and out of love even faster. For Kyle and Marcel, it’s love at first sight. Marcel is not a citizen, so they finagle him a sham marriage with their lesbian neighbor Sarah. All is secure and happy until Kyle’s troubled sister April arrives, homeless and full of drama. The brother and sister start their old band back up, and April wants rid of the boyfriend. She’s manipulative, jealous and wants her brother all to herself. In bits and pieces we learn some of April’s history. She’s a transsexual hooker with a history of mental problems and a complete lack of cash. It’s when April decides she wants to change her gender back to male that things really get crazy. Set on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, Between Love & Goodbye has an authentic East Village flavor, a great score and a compellingly original story.
Andreas is very good with his movies, but this one comes across more as an incomplete soap. The ending screams cliff-hanger, hence very soap-ish.
The leads are both attractive, likable and mostly believable, Harmon is irredeemable & unlikeable (not his acting but poor character dev), his character could have used real pathos - not just anger. Jane Elliot just chews up EVERYTHING around her; she's that good. Her character made the movie, for me.
I don't know anyone who would give a sibling that kind of access and control over their lives the way Miller's character does, so that becomes unbelievable for me. Most 20 somethings would give their lovers more of a chance to redeem themselves than this script allows. Besides, who doesn't breakup & get back together (dozens of times) in their 20's?
The music scenes are another problem, unbelievable. The obvious instrument faking, the obviously fake 'clubs', & Millers inability to sing rock (convincingly) were real problems. Anyone who's been in a rock band won't buy much of these scenes. Miller CAN sing, just not pop/rock. With all those criticisms, I LIKED THE SOUNDTRACK.
Andreas should consider a sequel to this project, if for no other reason than to address & clean up the mistakes. If the effort takes 2 or more hours, so be it. He's proved to me he's got it in him to do good work.

This movie is decent but I did stop in the middle and return to it another day because it seems like they came up with this idea for a movie did not think it all the way threw got bord half way then half assed the rest

Rent this movie before you buy it, as it is "TERRIBLE!!! "Five Thumbs DOWN"!!!
I made the mistake of pre-booking the film, and now I'm stuck with a movie which, in plain English, "stinks"!! And I mean "stinks"!!
The acting, along with the actors, are very bad. "AND"....the guy who is suppose to be French........Well, I have never heard anyone do such a poor job as he does with his phoney French accent. I can't even begin to understand how a diector would allow that pass off in a movie. The accent is so terrible, that it's rediculous.
I don't know which ghetto was used to film this movie in, but when you see the apartments, and the buildings, where they are filming from, you will be dumb founded, What nasty fire traps were used in the filming.
Than, there's the suppose to be, shocking ending, For, if the guy was suppose to be killed, and is lying down dead in the street, after being hit by a vehicle. Than,"WHY", are his eyes flickering up & down? You have to see it in order to believe it.
I have to say, that Casper Andreas, was not having a good day when he put this movie together. It is one huge Atomic Flop in my books.

Marcel (Justin Tensen) and Kyle (Simon Miller) are lovers who share a romance that comes to no good. The film opens with French citizen, Marcel marrying Sarah, a lesbian so that he can stay in the United States with his boyfriend. Marcel and Kyle move in together and begin their lives together, However, when Kyle’s troubled transgendered sister, April (Rob Harmon) comes to live with them for a while, things begin to break down and the results are awful for the two guys. Kyle is unable to pay attention to both Marcel and April. Marcel wants more time with his lover; he feels that April is getting in the way but he deals with the problem with aggression and in an insulting manner. His relationship with Kyle begins to slip away from him. At the same time April is having her own problems especially when her body does not accept her breast implants. She has them removed, shaves her head and decides to return to being a man again.
This is a movie that is full of energy and the cast, as an ensemble, is quite good. The direction by Casper Andreas (“A Four Letter Word”) is fine but the trouble is in the screenplay. The dialog is quite poor and so much of what is said seems forced. The plot just does not ring true and we do not know whether to feel sorry for the guys or to hate them.
I often enjoy the films of Andreas but this one left me devoid of feeling. The ending, as shocking as it is, just made me angry. I expected much more. Nevertheless, the soundtrack is quite good and the boys are easy on the eyes. Maybe my judgment of the movie is incorrect; you will have to see for yourself.
