REVIEW
Precocious 12-year-old Maxi loves to wear girly clothes and enact beauty pageants with his equally queer, gender-bending friends. His father, Paca, and his siblings are small time criminals, yet Maxi’s feminine identity isn’t a problem at home -- indeed, they happily let him play the woman of the house. Family relations become strained, however, when Maxi becomes enamored with an idealistic cop, Victor. The pair become close friends -- a friendship which the determined Maxi attempts to transform into full-blown romance -- but when a murder is committed by Maxi’s brother, Victor becomes intent on busting the kid’s crooked family. Caught in the middle, Maxi experiences some harsh epiphanies about his family, his crush and his own sense of self. A sort of cross between Ma Vie En Rose and "The Sopranos" set in a Manila slum, Auraeus Solito’s debut feature is a fresh, delirious departure. While poverty and flashes of violence bring weight to the film, the effervescent and fearless performance of Nathan Lopez as Maxi blooms above all else. (English and Tagalog with English subtitles)
