SYNOPSISA gay John Grisham-style thriller, Kyle Schickner’s gripping Strange Fruit follows a young New York City attorney as he investigates the Louisiana lynching of a childhood pal.
REVIEW
William Boyals (Kent Faulcon), an accomplished young black attorney, returns to his rural Louisiana hometown after a gay friend, Kevlin, is the victim of a horrendous hate crime. Local Sheriff Jensey (Tom Jones) seems less than committed to finding the killer – or killers – sending William sniffing around for the truth himself. Staking out the bayou gay bar that Kevlin was lynched outside, and its secretive denizens, he begins to suspect a diabolical conspiracy. And where there’s a conspiracy, and lots of racists and homophobes, there’s danger. Redneck cops, closet cases, complacent townies and a bitter past make William’s quest one he may not complete – or survive. Schickner’s ambitious low-budget thriller delivers all the goods of the best big-budget Hollywood equivalents - unexpected twists, nail-biting suspense, a mind-blowing climax and loads of atmosphere (John Sayles’ Passion Fish was shot in the same region). The film also examines, with an honest harshness, the strains many gay African-Americans endure within their own communities.
