A bold and wonderful revisionist Mansfield Park.
Lesbian director Rozema's revisionist version of Jane Austen's Mansfield Park is a comic feminist delight -- a truly sweet, romantic film. Like all of Austen's stories, this one revolves around a family, their un-wed daughters and marrying them off. The plucky heroine Fanny Price (a superlative O'Connor), from poor beginnings and now living on the stately Bertram family estate, is being courted by a rake, Henry Crawford (Nivola). She has been in love since childhood with her cousin Edmond (Miller), who is now engaged to Henry's worldly sister Mary. Not to worry, for by the end of the film the proper couplings will be made. Though there are a few liberties taken by Rozema (When Night Is Falling), including a lesbian flirtation - the film possesses a magical quality and remains true to Austen's spirit.
