NO ORDINARY LOVE was a major disappointment. The cover on the VHS (featuring a cover illustration of three beautiful and shirtless guys - the DVD cover is different) promised that NO ORDINARY LOVE was an “official selection at 28 gay and lesbian film festivals.” One would think that halfway intelligent folks were vetting the choices at most of those festivals. After watching this dreck I no longer make such an assumption. Even giving the filmmakers the benefit of the doubt because of a couple of attractive casting choices and perhaps two halfway clever plot twists, the effort is still long, drawn-out drivel. Everyone sleeps with everyone else and no one has any loyalty – even to his own character. The script abounds in every trite homo device you can name including the doting mother seemingly ignorant of her son's orientation, closeted macho teens, violent but lusted-after s&m psychos, male strippers, nympho neighbors, the obligatory fat friend, and ... well … everything except lots of sibilant listhping. You get the picture. But do yourself a favor: don't get this picture. NO ORDINARY LOVE makes a pretense of being about relationships and specifically that narrow ground at which love, lust and friendship either intersect or collide. However, no amount of film festival hype could ever convince me that the characters here are “friends” or that they even have a clue about whatever responsibilities might be entailed by something as real as love. At best, these people know a little something about lust – and that only because lust doesn’t require much thought or experience. I give it 1 star and that largely because of the artwork on the VHS box.

I happened upon this title by chance and was totally pleased. The two boys playing Vince and Ramon are cute as hell, and their unusual love story is both original and erotic. The director took a chance combining comedic and thriller elements, and he was mostly successful. To me, it seems like early Pedro Almodovar. Check this one out.

I can't believe the TLA reviewer gave this movie 3 stars. It was poorly acted and the plot was convoluted and not believable. There was however a nice fantasy sequence and another nice turn of events (don't want to give away the plot). However, on the whole, I felt I wasted my money on this one. Should have rented it instead.
