REVIEW
Sort of a prequel to Emily Brontë's "Jane Eyre," Wide Sargasso Sea reinterprets and updates the story and locates it on the steamy beaches of Jamaica. The story is told from the perspective of Rochester's (Parker) first wife, Antoinette (Lombard), a beautiful Creole woman whose family has a foreboding history. A tale of betrayal, love, madness and power, much of the subtext is ripped from the original novel turning the first half of this film adaptation into a semi-erotic mish-mash filled with shots of full frontal nudity, both male and female. Things pick up, however, in the second half when the story returns to its roots, focusing on the magical traditions of the island's people. You Might Also Like
