REVIEW
A dark, multilayered sci-fi thriller inspired by the obscure French short La Jetée. Willis plays a prisoner in a futuristic underground society who is forced to go back in time to track down the mythic "Army of the 12 Monkeys" and study the germ warfare holocaust that wiped out most of humanity. Over-shooting the designated time period, he is thrown into an insane asylum where he must convince his shrink (Stowe) that he is not delusional (or is he?). Unlike most time travel stories, this hyper-intelligent screenplay devotes proper attention to the elements of tragedy, pathos and inevitability thereby distracting from the attendant conundrums and paradoxes inherent in the genre. A masterpiece of post-apocalyptic grunge, 12 Monkeys is replete with Gilliam's trademark set design of ductwork and steam vents. Willis proves he's more than an action star, and Pitt is exceptional as an off-the-wall asylum mate who's not as crazy as he seems.
