REVIEW
Like those fondly remembered soapers of the 1940s, whose stars could help gloss over any screenplay contrivance, Legends of the Fall is an old-fashioned melodrama which, while occasionally overdone in its dramatic construction, never fails to entertain. Beginning just before the start of WWI, the film stars Pitt as one of three sons of a stalwart Montana rancher (Hopkins). When their youngest brother (Thomas) returns home with a beautiful fiancée (Ormond), siblings Pitt and Quinn nuture romantic feelings for her. Thus sets in motion an encompassing story of love, betrayal, war and familial ties. Director Zwick allows his actors full range of emotions, and however good the ensemble is, all are upstaged by the sprawling locales and the film's gorgeous cinematography.
