A Florida Enchantment
REVIEW
Considered one of the earliest films to feature ambiguous sexual attraction, this cross-dressing comedy, based on an 1896 Broadway play, is set at an elegant Florida resort. A young woman (Storey), frustrated at her fiancé's philandering, ingests magic seeds from the African Tree of Sexual Change which quickly transforms women into men and vice versa. While she remains feminine looking (though she does sprout a cute mustache), she immediately assumes the behavior of a man: swaggering belligerently, smoking furiously and making repeated advances on other women. The seeds ultimately fall into the hands of her former finacé, who becomes an effeminate female in a male body. An ahead-of-its-time comedy that humorously explores men and women's sexual roles.
