That Korean director Park Chan-wook's epic revenge odyssey scored big with the Tarantino-led jury at Cannes should come as no surprise. With a twisting, time-shifting narrative reminiscent of Pulp Fiction and Jackie Brown, gorgeous, inventive cinematography, brutal action and great acting, Oldboy is both exhausting and exhilarating entertainment and, at the same time, an emotional and psychological rollercoaster. Upon escaping from a mysterious fifteen year imprisionment, a man begins an obsessive quest to find out who jailed him and why, opening old wounds and sustaining many new injuries along the way.
