Review

Sirk's classic melodrama about the fall of an oil tycoon's family enjoyed a successful rerelease after a 20-year theatrical absence. Filmed in lurid color and acted in a heightened and exaggerated style, we watch the self-destructive antics of the Hadley children. The son (Stack) is a lush and his sister (Malone, in an Oscar-winning performance) is a nymphomaniac. Add "good girl" Bacall and Hudson and you get a continually enjoyable potboiler in the great 1950s Hollywood tradition. "Dynasty" and "Dallas," move over!
