Review

The film opens early in the morning on a crisp, cloudless autumn day, prompting instant recall of the cerulean skies of September 11, 2001. Two New York City Port Authority police officers, John McLoughlin (Cage) and Will Jimeno (Peña), begin their day with the routine of a thousand mornings, with no awareness of what lies ahead. McLoughin’s and Jimeno’s story is already known: they were pulled from under tons of steel and concrete rubble occupying the space where the Towers once stood. They were trapped for hours, breathing concrete, dealing with settling debris and random fires, their breath constricted by the terrible weight above them. Jimeno was extracted after 12 hours; McLoughlin, more intractably constrained, was pulled out after 22 hours.

The film moves from the two buried men, to their families waiting for word, to the two ex-Marines who heard the noises Jimeno made by banging on a pipe; it shows glimpses of the world’s reaction as word spread and the global zeitgeist registered a sea change. World Trade Center contains few of the images that inundated the media in the aftermath. Those pictures are already seared into our collective consciousness, evoked here by the shadow of a plane against a wall and gruesome, metallic sounds from the bowels of hell. This is how the people at Ground Zero experienced that day, with uncomprehending confusion amid paper snow and falling bodies.

This is in many ways the most conventional film in director Stone’s body of work, mainstream and with little polemic. It’s a small, personal glimpse into a momentous event, episodic, told in vignettes, isolated moments from a period of suspended time. The low-key treatment is surprising for Stone, but no less impactful than his usual frenzy. World Trade Center is thoughtful and reflexive; it imparts an unexpected healing effect, pays tribute to everyday heroes and offers a kernel of hope in a brutal world.
