Linklater’s mesmeric rumination on the existential nature of dreams, life and death is a uniquely transporting cinematic trip. Live-action footage of real actors has been digitally tweaked, colored, shaded and contorted to create a fluid, animated universe that is eerily rooted in "reality" yet brazenly defies the governing laws of physics.

Wiggins wakes up to the weary realization that he’s trapped inside an unending lucid dream. We follow him as he floats through the colorful, shape-shifting landscape and connects with a vaguely familiar assortment of closet nihilists, philosophers and anarchists, some of whom we’ve met before (Delpy and Hawke reprise their roles as the moonstruck lovers from Before Sunrise). Each fleeting character ponders the (in)significance of identity, the futility of free will, the tangibility of reality and the power of dreaming. Are we sleepwalking through our lives? Or are we wake-walking through our dreams?

Though the film’s astonishing visual power is diminished on the home video screen, its lofty themes, combined with Linklater’s unparalleled knack for capturing the raw angst of his generation, make Waking Life a truly groundbreaking achievement.
