Review

Eastwood's lyrical, craftsmanlike direction, a brilliantly structured screenplay by David Webb Peoples, a superlative ensemble cast and superior production values all contribute to make this Oscar-winning revisionist western a modern masterpiece. Eastwood stars as a retired gunfighter who picks up the gun for one last time when a group of prostitutes put a price on the head of a sadistic cowboy. As Clint and partner Freeman make their way, Hackman's tyrannical sheriff (Hackman deservedly won an Oscar for his sensational performance as Little Bill) prepares for the expected onslaught of hired killers about to descend upon his small town. One of the many beauties of Unforgiven is director Eastwood's homage to the traditional western while at the same time expanding the boundaries of the genre. Not since Red River has a film so successfully explored the complexities of moral ambiguity. The myth of the Old West is a bloody one and as Eastwood sees it, death is close up and not at all the stuff of lore.
