Stanwyck and Webb offer accomplished performances in this luxuriously melodramatic retelling of the sinking of the Titanic. As opposed to the excellent British drama A Night to Remember, which tells its story via the ship's personnel, this glossy Hollywoodization is seen through the eyes of the ship's passengers, with married couple Stanwyck and Webb its main focus. And even if Night is more authentic, this Titanic is soap opera of the first order, thanks to an Academy Award-winning screenplay and a marvelous ensemble. (The story of Titanic was also retold in 1996 and 1997)
