Review

In director Emmerich's crowd-pleasing blockbuster Independence Day, there was a curious streak of flag-waving weaving through the carnage and battles. That same patriotic zeal also finds its way in The Patriot, an often rousing, often sentimental actioner, but here it makes much more sense. An old-fashioned Revolutionary War story told with outstanding cinematography and elegant production design, The Patriot casts Gibson in the tailor-made role of Benjamin Martin, a father and widower who would rather use diplomacy than guns for American independence. When a particularly nasty British colonel (Isaacs) murders one of his children, Martin spearheads the local militia in the bloody, deadly fight against the British. As was the case with ID4, this is not subtle storytelling. Characters wear their motivations on their sleeves, and Isaacs' military monster is a Nazi bad guy dressed in a red coat. But at the heart of the story is a compelling, even stirring re-creation of the birth of a nation, and the determination of a father to keep his family together. Gibson is extremely effective as Martin, based on a real-life character who was also the inspiration for the 1950s TV show "Swamp Fox." As would be expected, the battle scenes are impressively staged, and have greater resonance than a few of the more intimate moments.
