Review

While Fellowship played like a road movie, this ambitious sequel (shot at the same time) seamlessly follows several simultaneous story lines. Hobbits Frodo and Sam are sidetracked on their quest by the tortured Gollum, a beautifully fleshed-out CGI character that's voiced by Serkis (who also served as the model). Saruman (Lee) is raising his army, while Gandalf (McKellen) has been resurrected as a glorious white wizard. Pippin and Merry, on their way back to the shire, run into a race of slow, wizened treefolk -- it's daunting to make a believable walking and talking tree, yet the effects are tremendous, and the trees' plight even becomes, dare we say it, moving. And most incredible is the DeMille/Griffith-sized spectacle of the battle at Helm's Deep: a few hundred humans, including hero Aragorn (the terrifically charismatic Mortensen), taking on an army of ten thousand monstrous orcs. Such scale could lead to chaos, but Jackson makes sense of it all, expertly showing all the smaller clashes while keeping an eye on the bigger picture. For anyone who laments that movies just aren't the same as during the golden era, this second installment of Jackson's mindbending trilogy is how they used to make 'em. All of 'em, all at once. And it is breathtaking.

Thank god for their extended version!!!

I saw this in the theatre, everything about it makes it an epic except for one thing: what spastic did the editing? Did the producers skipped using a decent editing crew in their budget? I bet they did! Here I'm watching an epic movie and they chop up the scenes to where the stories are very confusing. The audience would NOT be figetty if they presented the necessary extended version of the film. Thank god it's finally available!!! If you haven't seen "Two Towers" yet, watch only this version so you can enjoy the brilliance of Joshua Jackson's adaptation. It will not give you a migrain like me who saw the "studio edit" theatre version. Enjoy the full entirety!!!

While the Fellowship of the Ring left us enchanted and enthralled by its beauty and color, we are thrown into a totally different world in The Two Towers. From the opening scene refreshing our memories of Gandalf's titanic battle against the Balrog, to the closing scene of Gollum plotting to reclaim the One Ring from Frodo, The Two Towers is a dark epic that superbly retells the story from J.R.R. Tolkien's novel. The film continues the stories of memorable characters such as Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli and their death-defying chase and ultimate fight against hordes of orcs across the plains of Rohan and for King Theoden at Helm's Deep. Also, Peter Jackson has fleshed out Arawen and Aragorn's relationship beyond the scope of what Tolkien wrote in his books and introduces a third dimension with the beautiful warrior-princess Eowen and her attraction to Aragorn. Befriending an ulikely ally, Merry and Pippin join forces with Treebeard, a talking, walking tree-like Ent, to stop Saruman before he can continue to wreak havoc across middle-earth. Gandalf triumphantly returns as a White wizard and single-handedly turns the tide of the battle at Helm's Deep giving new hope in the battle against the Dark Lord Sauron. But the battle is but the first in a war that is to continue into the next film Return of the King. We are left not knowing if Frodo and Sam will destroy the ring for good, if Gandalf and Saruman will finally face off or if Arawen will win the heart of Aragorn over Eowyn. If you can't wait to find out, a thorough reading of the excellent literature will answer all your questions, unless of course, Peter Jackson decides to add a few twists along the way.
