Review

In one of director Schlesinger's lesser outings, the historic tearing down of the Berlin Wall sets in motion a bittersweet recollection of Cold War romance and intrigue. Scott plays a British telephone specialist who begins working for the Americans in their attempt to tap into Russian phone lines (by tunneling into East Berlin). Hopkins (bad accent and all) is the brash Yank commander overseeing the project who must contend with possible conspiracy when Scott falls for a local German woman (Rossellini) who may or may not be a spy. The espionage aspect of the film is quite compelling, but as a romance the film sags. And though the film features good period design, Schlesinger's sluggish pace helps detract from the scenario.
